Synopsis
This work features 4 sheets at a very detailed scale of six inches to the mile. The massive expansion of the Victorian age produced a demand for detailed maps to determine ownership of land and to plan development. Edward Stanford, a leading Victorian cartographer, produced these maps to show the railways, factories, docks and roads that were springing up everywhere. So detailed are these maps that even individual gardens of suburban homes are shown as are separate platforms of the new railway termini and, astonishingly, even the individual statues in the city's squares. Anyone seeking information about their forebears will be able to see the roads, alleyways and outlying villages where they lived; where they went to school; the pubs where they spent their meagre wages; the churches and chapels where they were married and where they attended Sunday services; the factories, docks and farms where they worked; also maybe the miserable workhouses where they ended their days and the burial grounds where they were laid to rest.

Beautifully Detailed Maps.
Maybe a bit strange for a woman, but I love maps. I got the 1520 - 1902 set first, which I came across in Hatchards in Piccadilly and had to have them. I then bought the 1863 lot from Amazon and have poured over them for hours. It's amazing to see London as it used to be and especially interesting to locate your own area and see what has changed and what has stayed the same. They would also be of use to family historians, who, like me, had ancestors living in the capital in the Victorian era. Great stuff.
excellent maps-great detail
Having an interest in the East End of London, buying these maps helped me to see just what was in the areas at particular periods.
Seeing the changes on paper and then seeing them in person really brings out the flavour of the times.
a must for family local and social historians
A valuable aid to assist in studies of London at that time, London today is crowded but Victorian London was much more so. Little wonder there was so much disease. This is a good starting point to get to know London better
