A Scrap-Book of Memories
Having been a lifetime Bunnymen fan, I jumped at the chance to get my hands on this. The format is almost like a scrapbook of memories, starting from the early days of the Crucial Three through to the present. The original text is sparse, as the book relies almost entirely on quotes, though I can't deny that the book makes for an interesting read.
However, as is often the case with the Bunnymen, there is far too much focus on Ian McCulloch. There are too many quotes from Tony Fletcher and Bill Drummond's earlier publications, and perhaps too many instances of similar quotes being grouped together. A bit of careful editing might have been called for. Additionally, there is criminally sparse coverage on the death of Pete DeFreitas and it would have been nice to have seen the lyrics reproduced in their original English spelling.
However, for all the books misgivings, the coverage is broad and informative and well worth a read. I just can't help but feel that the best band in the world could have been better served.
Turquoise Days The Weird and World of Echo and the Bunnymen
This book is truely inspirational . Not only does it have every song lyris in it, it explains how the songs were formed and how ideas were hatched. Superb commentaries from all band members and lots of unusual snip- bits too especially about Will, enough to make you laugh out loud. Commentaries are also supplied my music mags and those involved in the industry. Mac also makes quite a few derogatary remarks about other 'musicians' which amused me. The pictures, many unseen before add that exrta deminsion to the book. Chris Adams has done a through job in compiling the book, no stone left unturned. Highly recommended for all Bunnymen fans.
