Product Description

The completely rewritten and revised Second Edition updates a famous work originally published by the Hughes Aircraft Company. Much more than a simple introduction, the book is actually a history, reference, tech manual, and textbook rolled into one beautiful illustrated volume, packed with full color photos, drawings, tables and charts, plus knowledgeable, informative text. retaining clear and colorful graphics with concise captions, and open layout, simple, clear descriptions, Blue Panels to present details a reader can skip on a first reading, Sidenotes to convey caveats and reviewer comments, and a wealth of real-world examples and photographs, the book is an ideal introduction to the subject for non-specialists: engineers, technicians, pilots, aerospace industry marketing, public relations and customer support personnel. Twelve new chapters cover all the sophisticated stealth radar techniques. Over 90 per cent of the illustrations are in color as the book describes over a dozen airborne radar systems currently in service, from long-range surveillance to environmental monitoring. The first three chapters can be used as a standalone briefing on modern radar for readers who need a quick introduction.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"The author has a very readable style. He is able to describe technically complex subjects in a clear and understandable way. This technique is aided immensely by the outstanding graphics...There is no book like this on the market.

Customer Reviews

An excellent book -covers basics through to the latest ideas5
This book was a god-send when I started working on the European Fighter Aircraft (Eurofighter). Although I already knew the basic idea behind radar and echo-location, having a degree in Opto-electronics and Laser Engineering didn't prepare me for working on an advanced radar system!
George Stimpson takes the reader through everything, from the very basic ideas behind the simple pulsed radar (Ping, and see how long it takes to come back, then factor in the speed of light, and you get distance) right the way through to the latest ramping chirp techniques, stealth radar, and the latest solid-state radar systems that are yet to be fielded by anyone other than Russia and the USA.
Never dull, always informative, with clear, colour diagrams and useful, interesting asides, this book is an ideal starter for ten, or for brushing up your skillset if you have been out of the business for a few years. Even if you are an old hand, you will find this book great for finding the exact formula you need, and might even teach you something new.

excellent5
This radar book is extremely good, full of very useful and carefully made colour illustrations. I am glad they re-issued it under a second edition, because the first edition from Hughes was very hard to find.
It is perfect to start learning radar even for ground systems (the basic theory is the same, and the coverage of crucial issues like spectrum, PRF, FFTs is really excellent in this book). Only gripes: the price (but it is worth it compared to other books - this one is full colour !!) and the lack of exercise or self-test.
As such it is a companion book to others like Kingsley/Quegan or Levanon (Radar Principles).
