On 24 July 1969 the crew of the historic first manned mission to the moon and their spacecraft Columbia arrived on the deck of the USS Hornet. The flight of Apollo 11 had been an unqualified triumph. The goals laid out by President John F Kennedy had been attained. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had walked on the dusty plains of the Sea of Tranquillity and had returned safely to the Earth with a treasure trove of unparalleled scientific information. Now it was the turn of the world's scientific community to try and place all of this new knowledge into perspective. Hundreds of people around the world jostled for access to scraps of the lunar rocks and dust. As always NASA's own managers, engineers and scientists were the first to pore over the details in an effort to maximise the return from future missions. Just prior to the launch of Apollo 12, NASA issued the Apollo 11 Mission Report. The document contained everything from the crew's observations about the reflection off their faceplates to the interaction between the Lunar Module's footpads and the dusty lunar surface. The CD-ROM offers complete onboard 16mm film footage, plus an exclusive 140 minute movie, 'Apollo 11: Moon Walk', a composition from two camera angles plus panoramas and pop-up still images. Also the landing of Eagle with stereo audio and subtitles plus much more...

Amazing addition to the series
As I was not even thought of when "Eagle" touched down on the moon in July 1969, I wanted to witness myself the historic events for myself. The DVD which accompanied this book let me witness everything that happened.
The DVD is crammed with amazing footage of the Apollo 11 mission. The entire duration of the moonwalk is recaptured in amazing clarity. As you can see Armstrong and Aldrin explore the surface you can also hear them in constant contact with Mission Control, Houston.
The descent to the surface of the moon in the Lunar Module is also recaptured. This too also has the radio contact with Houston. Subtitles are included for this sequence.
Along with 'mini films' showing the crew activities, docking and undocking, this is the main reason why I bought this book. It gives us teenagers a chance to see events that occured before our time. But the book is also a good buy. Fans of Robert Godwin will probably know the usual layout of his Mission Report books. This book follows on from Vol 1 and Vol 2 of the NASA reports for Apollo 11.
If, like me, you are into the Apollo space programme this book will be a dream come true. For others, the book may prove slightly challenging due to the authentic 'space talk'. But for me, the DVD alone is worth the price!
Amazing but really technical
I found this book really technical even if I'm a space enthusiast.I already know much of the things described in this book but here they are really explained as it could have been in the debriefing after the Apollo 11 flight. You can sense the really "titanic" struggle to put a man on the moon looking at all this graphics and acronims all over various pages, you can understand that it wasn't a simple thing!
Here you can find detailed descriptions of Tranquillity Base and where the rock samples where taken and even all the procedures to prevent the possibility of a contamination of earth environment by "lunar bacters".
But the really best things you can find on this book are not on its pages but on the DVD ROM that comes along the book...here there's all the moonwalk video with really clear images and all the powered descent video from the inside of the LM5 with a filtered audio really understandable that transmit you all the emotions of that historical night of July 20 1969!
Without count photos and panoramics of Tranquillity Base and all of the most important phases of the Apollo11 flight.
Superb Information......
I was wary buying this book as I already own Apollo 11 Vols 1&2 in case it was just another update but I was wrong....!
The book is in fact better than Vols 1 & 2 because it supplies the answers to the questions raised in flight by drawing on the Formal Post Flight Technical Review Document and not so much on the pre-flight Press release information, which, while interesting, leaves you wanting more answers to what happened & why.
Some good technical references make the content interesting & challenging to read but by far the best is the DVD content with the highlight being the whole LM descent in real time with linked audio......a real treat to be able to watch and listen to Man's First Landing on another World from start to end. Worth the price of the book on it's own!!
Hopefully this marks the trend for further volumes of the Moon Landing flights which again draw on the Post Flight technical Review volumes........
