A good introduction to broad management principles
There is very little written on the subject of midwifery management. This book fills an important gap and is an excellent attempt to introduce general management principles to midwives. It brings together the ideas of some of the most influential management guru's of our times: Tom Peters, Charles Handy, and John Adair. Unfortunately for the author, it was written at a time of changing tides in management in general and NHS Human Resource Management in particular. This is evident in the scant coverage of Corporate Culture which, with hindsight, could have warranted greater analysis, especially with the trend towards staff welfare in the NHS.The result is an unfortunate dearth of information on staff welfare, team psychology and the development of staff support systems which makes for rather sterile reading. However, despite being necessarilly superficial (due to the breadth of subject matter covered) this book is still a very good introduction to the subject and makes an excellent starting point for any midwife considering a career in management.
