An outstanding introductory text on marxism for all.
Callinicos' book is quite simply a masterpiece. Rescuing Marxism from eastern bloc Stalinism, Callinicos explains that Marxism is a way of understanding how the world is shaped and changed rather than a political doctrine, in simple yet informative language. By explaining Dialectical and Historical materialism, Callinicos demonstrates how marxism can be used to explain the complex social, political and economic events and ideas that change and shape our world. Whether your thinking is left wing or not, Marxist political and economic theory is relevent today in terms of understanding how people interact within society and are shaped by the material conditions and economics of the time. A word of warning; so incredible are many of the ideas discussed in the book that you might find yourself a Marxist by the end of it. In conclusion Alex Callinicos has written a comprehensive summary of the marxist philosophy which is not only accessable but incredibly readable. Very, very recommended. A life changing book.
