An excellent resource for all maths teachers
The title is slightly misleading, in that the book contains 16 variations of the same game, but don't be deterred by that. Each game contains 12 cards, one of which explains to the students what they have to do, with the rest giving clues to the answers. The students then have to solve the jigsaw of information to arrive at the solution.
Most of the games can be used straight out of the box - just photocopy the sheet, cut out the cards and you have a ready-made lesson. One or two of the games contain some complex clues which I prefer to rewrite, but there is a blank set of cards included which makes this very easy to do.
The topics cover all strands of the national curriculum - number, algebra, geometry and data handling - and are suitable for levels 5 through 8.
Highly recommended as a way of adding variety and group-working skills to maths lessons.
fantastic teacher resource
I have used the team challenges in this book with years 7, 8 and 9 and now that they are used to them the pupils are delighted when they see the cards on my desk. The games encourage connected thinking - pupils have to work out what they are being asked to do, extract the necessary information, decide how to solve the puzzle and how to present their answers. I have started laminating the cards because I will use them again and again. These are also excellent for pupils who are held back by their writing/reading abilities as there is so much oral work involved.
Excellent Resource
I would give this book my highest recommendation. I have used the activities in it many times. My students find the activities fun, and they are always enthusiastic about completing the tasks. I just wish there was a book 2.
