Product Description

101 cases where sport in the UK, and the rest of the world, has rubbed up against the law - whether in a court or a tribunal. Ian Hewitt looks at cases as diverse as US baseball's Joe Jackson to Eric Cantona's kung-fu attack on a fan in 1995. Many have contributed, some reluctantly, to the history of leading sports figures' encounters with the law. Hewitt's own favourite is the upset Leicester soccer fan who sued a referee for shock suffered as a result of the official's penalty decision in the last minute of extra time in an FA Cup tie.

Editorial Reviews

Review
have a fine book on my desk: Sporting Justice: 101 Sporting Encounters with the Law, by legal standards racily put together by Ian Hewitt, a lawyer who was involved with the foundation of the FA Premier League. This book is a treasure trove of human folly. It's sad thing when lawyers get involved in sport. But, alas, the person who told you that sport was cut off from the rest of life, in its own magical little world, was lying. Simon Barnes, The Times Still looking for that elusive present to give the lawyer in your life? I can heartily endorse Sporting Justice - 101 Sporting Encounters with the Law (Sportsbooks) written by Ian Hewitt, retired Freshfields partner, and just out in time for the festivities. ...Complete with glittering legal analysis and stories from golf to motor and horse racing this is a thoroughly entertaining legal book to fall asleep over after dinner. Edward Fennell, The Times Fascinating ... an illuminating book, meticulously researched and entertainingly written. For a 370-page hardback, it is also surprisingly good value.
