A fantastic spell book, bound in red velvet!
This book is well worth the money. Whether you are new to witchcraft, or have been practicing it for years, this is the one to buy, especially if you want to concentrate on love magic. The photographs are beautiful, and so are the spells. Well done Titania! Hocus Pocus is also excellent.
Mechanical magic for those with passing intrest
Bewitched, like Tatania's other spell books and her Beauty Spells range at Boots, are beautifully presented, and for a good reason, as well as cashing in on the growing interest in witchcraft the appearance covers up the many things missing from her books. Tatania's books are geared towards a certain target audience, that of experimenting teens and bored housewife's.
Bewitched is a love spell book, because it is not tradition specific - i.e. Not geared towards Wiccan witches, Pagan Witches, Christian witches etc. (Although it does include some Pagan ideas) - it allows her to write books that are easily accessible to all those interested in witchcraft, however there is also a downfall in this, which is that without the tradition there are not the beliefs/ideas to back up why magic works, nor does it include morals when using witchcraft or spells - which in the case of love spells is something that especially needs to be considered. Also lacking any reference to the importance of self-constructed spells and why they are used by witches instead of pre-written spells.
Getting past the coloured velvet cover and the glossy pages lies the idea that love can be attracted with magic, which is quite true however again without the theories and ethics behind the magic it begs the question - why do these people want so desperately to attract love with such spells?
Titania does cover some of the basic elements of magic working in this book, starting the book off with a simple explanation into colour, concentration and magic circles as best she can without a tradition to follow and without alienating her readers, although misses out ideas such as raising power and grounding which do tend to aid in spell work.
She also later uses some better-known magic techniques such as binding and candle magic, but again without much, if any, explanation or ethics of using the techniques.
One quite nice charm about Titania is that like many she does include a bit of information about herself, her family and her use of the spells, not much, but what is given gives it a bit of a personal touch. Titania also includes a lot of superstitions and folk lore which adds a nice touch to the book by adding some good old fashioned magic ideas.
The spells themselves are simple, however she does have high expectations of what her readers have lying about the house or what her readers can afford to buy for the spells involved in this book. She doesn't offer much in the way of explanation into why you do certain things within the spells she gives, you will often find yourself at the end of a spell not only wondering why you have just done what you have done, but also whether it is actually likely to work - although the results will eventually come there is little in the way of reassurance as to whether your spell is likely to work because you are left with more questions. Also it should be noted that without an understanding of exactly how magic works, there is little chance of the spells in this book working as desired.
The end of the book has some useful information for a basic understanding of correspondences. This includes a simple list of symbols and associations for use in choosing a charm or item to use during a spell, a short list of tree/moon associations in accordance to Druid tradition - however this does not include information on the trees themselves, and there is a very short list of essential oils - I notice that she gives no health warnings along with the essential oils list, please note that if you buy this book and use this list you MUST know what oils you can or can't use with certain health conditions/complaints!
This book is really for those with a passing interest in spells, but without a tradition or the understanding of how magic works or how to work it to the desired effect so instead work mechanical magic. It isn't totally without knowledge, but Titania doesn't seem to want to share any of this information with her readers for fear of cutting off some of her well paying readers which means all the money paid for the books are a waste of time because without an understanding of how magic works spells are pretty useless.
Its advantages are also its flaws.
