Abdominal Ultrasound gives the trainee and practising sonographer, radiologist or clinician a detailed and accessible guide to the techniques and diagnostic applications of ultrasound of this part of the body, with its complex multi-organ systems. It includes normal appearances and variations, discussion of the common clinical problems present in the abdomen and the main applications of ultrasonography in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of disease. The inclusion of clinical details helps give the non-medical sonographer an increased awareness of the clinical background of the patient. Throughout the book, there is an emphasis on the practical aspects of scanning procedures, with advice on how to avoid common pitfalls and obtain the most accurate and diagnostically useful images. Useful guidelines are also provided on setting up a scanning room and selecting and using appropriate equipment. For ease of reference, individual chapters are devoted to each of the different organ systems and over 250 high quality halftone and line illustrations help to illustrate every aspect of abdominal ultrasound that is likely to be encountered in day-to-day practice.

Review
M. Stocksley's textbook on abdominal ultrasound has an extremely practical layout: It is an easy-to-read manual with high-quality illustrations. The emphasis of the book is put on ultrasound investigation for solving clinical problems. The book is designed for health care professionals who have already started their training in the field of ultrasound and who are taking their first steps in abdominal scanning. It provides clinical and ultrasound information which helps in understanding the normal appearance, variations and pathology in the abdomen. The basics of ultrasound are easy to read and comprehend. Excellent schematic diagrams support the understanding of the text. Unfortunately, the actual aspects of color Doppler ultrasound imaging of the abdomen, which presently are a highly appreciated additional tool for abdominal imaging are completely missing. Thus, the book can only be recommended to those starting with abdominal ultrasound imaging, but the reader has to be informed that he will need an extra reference book for the technical aspects and understanding of color-enhanced ultrasound imaging of the abdomen. In summary, the book can be recommended to those starting with abdominal ultrasound and are seeking a book with a systemic approach which is easy to understand and which is illustrated with instructive schematic diagrams. I would like to encourage the author to provide a second edition which includes the use of color Doppler ultrasound as soon as possible.
