A must for all nostalgics and others
This book is amazing for the details of home, school and street life the author has managed to include. Although specific to an area of West London, much of what he writes will be totally familiar to all who were children in the immediate pre- and post-war years in Britain, wherever they lived; for younger people, it provides an interesting insight into what life was like for kids of this earlier era. New readers will be surprised at how many memories will re-surface! Highly recommended!!!
Great book about a child's life in London in the 30's & 40's
This is a "must read" book for all Anglophiles. Mr. Betts takes us back to his childhood in the late thirties and early forties and gives us an introspective to family life in a London suburb just before and during the war. The trials and tribulations of youngsters of that time are pictured in prose as young Anthony's adventures are recalled at home, at school and on holiday.
I certainly recommend this book to all who "think" they understand the background of Brits and their reserved way of interaction with each other and with Americans. As a matter of fact, Americans who think they know and understand others need to read this book to get a real-world, personal understanding.
I certainly recommend reading!
