Helps to practice technique - but do master the syllabus too4
This book covers the core syllabus for the MRCS (Member of the Royal College of Surgeons) exam as was. Core included: perioperative medicine, trauma, intensive care and neoplasia. The College has recently changed its exam format, so that the old divisions no longer apply. The modern, intercollegiate (ie, applying to the English, Glasgow, Edinburgh etc colleges in total instead of separately) exam is divided into Applied basic science and Clinical applications. The same information is covered in the syllabus in toto, but is divided up differently.

The core practice papers book contains five separate papers (based on the old style exam) with both MCQs and EMQ style questions. These papers test a broad range of knowledge and allow candidates to sit a "mock" exam against a recommended time. Practice in this way is a valuable method of mastering the technique, especially for those not familiar with it.

At the back of the book are the answers, with reasonably complete explanations of the answers as a useful method of checking understanding.

Despite this book being outdated, it still has a place for testing technique and checking knowledge. Candidates sitting both the written papers simultaneously will be covering more-or-less the same syllabus as before, and there is considerable overlap.

An excellent aid to revision5
This is a most valuable aid to revising for the MRCS exam. The explanations are detailed and allow information to be grasped easily.
