When Stilks was a kid growing up in London, he was so poor that he had to go out hunting pigeons for his family's supper. Now he has risen to become one of the most famous club doorman. Anecdotes include the night he saved Sid Vicious from murder and how he has been shot with guns and crossbows. Even Lenny "The Guv'nor" McLean once said that Stilks was always the best man to have behind you in a ruck.

5 Star read
This is one book that I would highly recommend, I brought it thinking it was going to be a typical gangster story but it ended up being one of the funniest books I have ever read.
It's basically an autobiography of a Doorman named Stilks who works the doors in London and how he has managed to survive working them for twenty-five years being confronted with all sorts of situations. I saw his documentary in the 'Hard Bastards' series on Channel 4 and he came across as an interesting character so I took a chance with the book and am glad I did, I thorougly enjoyed it.
STILKS
Every now and again you come across a book that is a little different in the true crime section. For me this book was that and when i started reading i didnt stop.I found the background work in the book very informative and with this knowledge it helps you understand why STILKS would never back down. The book didnt glamourise violence just explained it better. With STILKS own admission that he came close to being beat on many occasions but he hung in to win the battle shows the man doesnt need to blow himself up like other books in the true crime section
Brilliant, refreshing, eye opening and very funny
I grew up going to the pubs and clubs that Stilks speaks about in his book (seeing him there on many occasions). I also did Judo like Stilts and can relate so much to the way in which it has helped him do his job.
I know all the places and most of the names mentioned in the book. I picked up the book by chance in my home town (which is many miles away from where I grew up in South East London). I have to say that this has been one of the best reads I have had.
The book is a very similar read to the "The Guvnor" by Lenny McLane (RIP). Again I grew up seeing Lenny every week at T's night club (and other places).
This book does the whole of South London proud ... anybody that grew up in that area will have something in common with this book, and if you did not grow up in South London then this book will open your eyes to how things were on a Friday and Saturday night.....enjoy.
Welldone Stilts, more of the same please.
Leslie
