Product Description

Everybody agrees that 11 September has changed the world, but nobody is quite sure how. This collection argues that how history judges its impact will depend on the political choices and strategies employed over the next decade. Will it be an age of fear, or an age of world community?

These essays by leading thinkers and statesmen from across the globe discuss the inevitable tension between the use of military power in the search for global security and the establishment of a rule-based world order; between the short-term realpolitik of building coalitions against terror and the values on which the long-term legitimacy of this agenda will depend.

The different authors examine how we need to rethink our strategies to relflect the changes in power, security, identity and governance in the world. Their different prescriptions map out the contours of a world community that is within our grasp.

Ehud Barak, Ulrich Beck, Tony Blair, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Malcolm Chalmers, Robert Cooper, Fred Halliday, David Held, Mary Kaldor, Mark Leonard, Kanan Makiya, Joseph Nye, Amartya Sen, Jack Straw, Fareed Zakaria.

Customer Reviews

Great book for the informed reader5
This collection of essays cover an ample spectrum of positions -members of the academic community and politicians alike- as well as subjects regarding the furute of the world after September 11, but prior to Irak. As a professional in International Relations, I loved its interesting and accurate insights into what the invasion of Irak would eventually turn into. At a moment in which hundreds of books are available on the subject, "Re-Ordering..." constitutes a great reference for anyone aiming to understand the profound implications of September 11. Although it is written mostly from a European perspective, some of its chapters also present a non-Western view which I found useful and informative. The fact that is allows you to reflect on cultural, political, and strategic aspects in just over 100 pages is certainly a plus.
