Written for leaders at all levels - strategic, organizational and team level - "The Leadership Pocketbook" explains how to inspire, influence, deal with change and achieve objectives. Illustrated throughout, the book adopts a practical approach, setting out the principles of leadership, the role of the leader, the skills required for effective leadership and the key challenges facing leaders in the modern business environment. A focus of the book, described by the author as "perhaps the most necessary skill for any leader", is self-awareness - to know yourself, to realise what your leadership strengths and weaknesses are and when you must continue to develop. The Pocketbook Series comprises more than 60 titles in the areas of training, personal development, management, customer care, sales and marketing and finance.

Handy hints for those in charge
This is one of a series of pocket-books aimed at managers which now number over sixty. They are a convenient size to keep in your jacket and flip through while waiting for a train.
The presentation is light and cheerful and as is the fashion much use is made of icons, bullet points and little questionnaires to work through. It is really a little workbook to dip into for inspiration and ideas rather than providing an in-depth read. Lots of pithy quotes, maxims and soundbites to help keep the tone upbeat and friendly.
The only drawback I found with this book was a feeling of frustration that interesting points are not explained or justified. But in a book of this size I suppose there is a limit to how much detail can be given. Leadership is now in vogue and is going to be a major issue in all organisations in the coming years. And this little book provides a simple overview and introduction.
If you like the idea of getting ahead of your colleagues, need a few tips for promotion or just like getting familiar with current ways of organisational thinking then take a closer look...
