The best from my favorite and only newspaper5
I reside in Chicago and recently received this book (along with "The Bedside Years: 1951-2000") from my stepdad and mother, who live in Manchester. Though I read The Guardian online nearly every day, I became particularly enamored with and grateful for it when I happened to be in Manchester on Sept. 11. I have yet to come across another newspaper, anywhere, that handled the coverage of Sept. 11 more tastefully, critically, and intelligently.

Now that I am back in the states and print editions of The Guardian are difficult to come by, I am especially happy to have "The Guardian Year: 2001." In a time when U.S. nationalism has reached a nearly hysterical level, and when virtually every act and object aims to be dubbed "patriotic," the critical yet thoughtful and pragmatic words of the Guardian are truly a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

Pure Pleasure.5
A book to dip into, to reflect on. The style, the scope, the subjects are the essence of the Guardian. This book is for everyone and in my view should be compulsary reading for all sixth form students.
Pure pleasure.

Essential Reading5
The Guardian is the only paper i buy at uni. It has a relaxed and authoritave style which makes it a very readable paper, not as snobby as the Scotsman and nowher near as irrelavent as a tabloid. It is this book which captures that essence, the talent and diversity is amazing. Imagine a paper which has Salman Rushdie contributing an article on 'Reality TV' (i.e. when will we see the first TV death, and then the second...) and the Art's and Entertainment journalist trying to convince his audience that Eminem is the best poet since Browning (complete with a reply from a reader asking if he is happy in his new mental hospital!). It is this kind of 'vitality' that makes the guardian book of the year a joy to read.

...Yeah, a bit expensive for a book the size of a novel (smaller in most cases) but i was very pleased to find a second book attached to my copy (both were together in the cellophane wrapping) which Amazon dosen't tell you about. The second book is 'The Bedside Years' which is the best of the past 50 years of Guardian writing. This comes in at just under 400 pages and is a fantastic 'Free gift'. I dont think it is for sale separately so don't miss out.

It is my first one and i can see myself getting them every year now. Also, 2001 is probably the nicest year number to start collecting.
