Customer Reviews

Easy to use, useful book but an age guide would be helpful3
I bought this book for my 10 year old, who will be sitting the 11+ in Autumn and needed to brush up on his vocabulary.
It was very difficult (as you can't see inside the book) to decide which level to get for him, so I bought books 1 and 2.
However on their arrival I realised these were too basic for his age. Fortunately I have younger children, so I gave the books to my 8 year old, and they were great for him. He has been working steadily through them and I've been generally impressed, although still unsure how to tell if this is genuinely building his vocabulary or not!
I would like to get the right level for my 10 year old, but am at a loss as to what this is - little info or guidance is available from the publisher. I might have a try at ordering books 3 and 4...

Painless way to broaden vocabulary and learn new words 5
I bought this book and others in the set to help my daughter prepare for the 11+ exams. Adjacent pages introduce 20 new words, with one side dedicated to using clues/defintions to complete a crossword puzzle and the other has sentences to complete using the same words. This way, each word is used twice; once to get the meaning right and the other to use it in a sentence. Some of the sections are dedicated to particular places like a railway station, items around the station are labelled so childern can learn what is what in areas they may not be familiar with.
The difficulty and complexity of the words increase throughout the series so you can actually start your 6 or 7 year old on the first books.
All in all this is a good series of books, expensive if you are buying the whole set, but if you are buying for your first child you can get your money's worth by getting your child to write in a notebook instead of inside the book so they can be passed down to younger ones in the family.

Hightly recommended.

Age guidance required.4
This series is potentially very useful. The problem I have with the whole series on offer is that when you buy them you do not get any guidance on the levels with regard to age appropriateness. Perhaps they want parents to use all these books from the begining whatever the childs age (very expensive). They offer no help if you have only just come across these books and are buying them for an older child, there is no info on how best to overcome or manage that situation. This is a pity, as much effort and thought has gone into this series and both singly & together they could be a very valuable tool at the right age. With age appropriate guidance, they would certainly help with 11+ prep. As it is, I have bought two books way below the level required, proving to be boring, unfortunately useless and therefore unnecessarily expensive.
