Product Description

Bridging the gap from medical school to the Foundation Year Programme, "Problem Based Learning" has been widely adopted by UK medical schools. This new, GMC-approved method of learning uses clinical scenarios to prompt self-directed learning for medical students. The use of real-life scenarios enables students to envisage the cases within a hospital setting - making them better prepared for the challenges of their Foundation Years. "Core Clinical Cases: Problem Based Learning Book 2" features more than 20 cases for students to work through. Each case is presented as a question in the first instance, challenging the reader to consider the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of patients in real-life scenarios. All cases are then examined and a full explanation is given to allow the reader to develop their knowledge, whilst testing their understanding. This new title from PasTest is a valuable reference tool for medical students at all stages of their training. It is the second problem based learning title from PasTest and builds on the success of "Core Clinical Cases: Problem Based Learning - Self Assessment for Medical Students". It is a concise practical guide for diagnosing and managing common cases. It has a range of clinical scenarios covering major specialties.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author
When writing the first book of Problem Based Learning: Core Clinical Cases we always envisaged a second book to follow soon after. The range of core clinical cases that medical students are expected to be able to diagnose and manage is,
as we are sure readers of this book will attest to, fairly daunting. The first book covered over sixty of these cases. This second book not only goes a long way to completing the list of core clinical cases, but also addresses those specialties which were not covered fully (or at all) in the first book. So, in this volume, for example, core surgical cases such as bowel cancer, peripheral vascular disease
and breast cancer have been included. We have also included trauma cases such as head injury and hip fractures. Cases from specialties such as emergency medicine, psychiatry, endocrinology, haematology and neurology are included
as well as those from palliative care, which is gaining increasing prominence in the undergraduate curriculum.
The format is the same as the first book; a series of questions prompts the reader through the diagnosis and management of each specific case with the addition of X-rays, CT scans, ECGs and blood results for added realism.
However, in this volume, we have given greater emphasis to the accompanying teaching notes, with the aim of writing not only a self-assessment book but also a core reference book for your clinical attachments.
We were delighted with the success of the first book and hope you find this second book as equally helpful during your medical studies.
