Unlike other CSA books currently on the market, this book features a DVD containing 13 consultations, accompanied by detailed written commentary. By slowly working through the DVD cases with the accompanying reading, candidates learn the consultation skills being tested in COT and CSA. Cases 8 - 13 have a CSA marking schedule and invite candidates to mark the CSA case, thereby familiarising them with the consulting behaviours examiners look for. On completion of the 1st DVD section, candidates are presented with 20 mock cases on which to practise, either alone or in small groups. The accompanying detailed analysis demonstrates to candidates an ordered, step-wise approach to data gathering, clinical management and interpersonal skills. Unlike its companion guide 'Cases and Concepts for the new MRCGP (ISBN 9781904842538), there is greater coverage of paediatric cases, telephone consultations, dealing with lists, breaking bad news and home visits. The third and final section of the book presents candidates with a further 15 mock cases on which to practice. All 48 cases featured in the book are presented in the same format: namely, a brief to the doctor about the patient; a patient summary sheet; tasks the doctor should concentrate on in this case (that is, consultation skills this case emphasises); a brief to the patient (so the person playing the patient has the necessary information); a detailed analysis of how the doctor should have consulted (according to the CSA domains); a debrief; a test your theoretical knowledge section featuring true/false questions and signposting to the relevant literature. The book and DVD are meant to be interactive, making it most useful for group revision. This book is essential for all those preparing for the new MRCGP.

Customer Reviews
Essential book for anyone in GP training - trainee or trainer.
I'm an ST3 due to sit the CSA in Jan/Feb and this book has given me the confidence to spend over £1000 on an exam.
It's well written, flows nicely and the mix of book and DVD makes it a refreshing learning tool. It can be used at any stage of GP training either giving you an idea of what you should be aiming for in your consultations or perfecting your technique later in training. I think it could also be useful for trainers in introducing COT assessments and helping you prepare for the CSA by developing further practice cases based around the mock case layout.
The DVD is helpful to watch and the chapter notes really focuses your approach in doing that - I found I no longer just watched but actually thought about patient and doctor interaction, the clinical issues, possible agendas and most importantly how I may have done things differently. The mock cases look really helpful in focusing study groups and practicing for the CSA. The design is very similar to what the CSA gives us so very useful for role-play. I've only done one so far but it was actually quite fun. I have a nicer feeling about the hidden agendas that may happen in the CSA.
Overall, an essential book for anyone in GP training with a good varied set of patient cases in DVD and mock case format. Makes me feel confident about passing GP training, and does so in a really easy-to-use, interesting format.
PS Don't wait until just before your CSA it's useful at any time.
content of books
The book is rubbish and useless and waste of time and money . It is better to get and create your own stations and practice with your colleagues. I regret that I wasted time on this book. Will not recommend anyone to buy this.
