Ou est Biggles?
Sadly Biggles makes no appearance in this 48 page comic book history of the Falklands war. Sadly - because what this needs badly is a central character/narrator to bring it together. Also the speech bubbles are awkwardly translated from the original french with characters having quite stilted conversations. The continuity is kept with date/time boxes - but the target audience of youngsters may find this confusing. Luckily the publishers of this English language edition have diplomatically not used the French title Biggles recounts the Malvinos War. All in all some nice illustrations but the simplistic recounting of a big story looses focus.
From Beyond The Grave
Old Man Biggles doesn't actually appear in this volume though his lawyers point out that it only says he recounts the story not that he participates. I must say that I enjoyed this swift trip through the Falklands War as we follow a couple of journos. Most of the major episodes are there and the artists get a chance to draw some excellent kit (they are particularly strong on aircraft). Some of the text has gone through the Babelfish mangle (Maggie T quoting Queen Victoria has gone English-French-English). The result remain superior to yet reminiscent of the British war comics of my youth. [Pause for Hovis Moment]. Good stuff.
