"Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes" provides sound nutrition guidelines to boost athletic performance in seven of the most popular endurance sports. Endurance athletes regularly push their bodies to the limits with a strenuous training regimen that demands smart nutrition. Monique Ryan offers proven strategies for improved athletic performance with sport-specific guidelines for the most popular endurance sports - triathlon, cycling, mountain biking, cyclo-cross, swimming, distance running, and rowing. In-depth information is presented in an easy-to-read and accessible style, with individual chapters dedicated to each endurance sport. Endurance athletes will learn how to assess body composition and find healthy approaches to losing body fat and building muscle. Ryan also gives practical pointers such as a review of popular ergogenic aids, tips on meal planning, typical shopping lists, sample menus, glycemic index of foods, facts about vitamins and minerals, and a comparison of sports nutrition products.

Everything you ever wanted to know
This is a very detailed and very useful book. It has a lot of information covering many endurance sports in detail - running, cross-country skiing, cycling, triathlon, swimming (not so much an endurance sport as endurance training). It even explains the background behind performance enhancing supplements and drugs (legal, illegal; proven, unproven and unlikely). There has clearly been a lot of research talking to actual participants in the sport.
So why only four stars? I am English/European and have a scientific background. Therefore, I was constantly driven mad by US measurements (cups of food and ounces of drink) and the mental gymnastics to interlink between metric and imperial systems (5.5 grams per pound of bodyweight for example). Another American/European divide is the thought of using "hot cider" as a warming alternative to an alcoholic drink. The author has clearly never tried walking or talking after a few pints of authentic farm scrumpy.
Cultural differences aside, I am treating the book as a reference guide and bible as I finally understand what carbo-loading is all about and the importance of recovery nutrition in the two hours after a long run.
Get fit faster with smarter nutrition.
A very useful for "Should eat, when to eat and how to plan your days and training in together. I used it with the Going Long and it made me a lot fitter by eating right.
Indoor Rowing Endurance
I have been taking indoor rowing seriously for over 4 years now. I currently hold two World and one British record. Over my many hours of training I have had plenty of specific questions about endurance nutrition. I ordered this book in a hope to clarify my many queries, it has answered EVERYTHING i want to know in detail and more! It provides a long and very detailed aproach to nutrition and I was suprised at the detail it went into with my sport aswel.
I haven't finished the book yet but I've found I'm constantly flicking through the paging and will do so for a long time as a point of reference.
I would recommend this book to any serious athlete and any aports enthusiast!
