Product Description

Since 2001, unembedded journalist Dahr Jamail has filed indispensable reports from Iraq that have made him this generation's chronicler of the unfolding disaster there. His behind-the-scenes book takes us past the lies of our political leaders, past the cowardice of the mainstream press, into the streets, homes and lives of Iraqi's living under US occupation. He reveals never-before-published details about the siege of Fallujah and the origins of the Iraq insurgency. Includes a foreword by Amy Goodman, host of the Democracy Now! radio programme.

Customer Reviews

Very powerful5
I read an interview with the author in the Guardian's G2 section yesterday, 8th May, and immediately went to Foyles in London to buy the book (full retail price, it's cheaper here on Amazon).

Dahr Jamail went to Iraq in the early days of the war after hearing international news reports differing so much from domestic (US) news output. He started emailing his reports and photos to friends, then he started corresponding for various sites and news agencies.

His style of writing is very down to earth, he's not trying to show off in any way. It's easy to understand what he saw from his descriptions, and you immediately get a sense of how frustrated this made him and how the war for 'freedom' backfired so easily. Actions which just seem like common sense were ignored. You're left wondering why the counties infrastructure couldn't just be repaired to please the local population and make their job there much easier. Instead, the invading forces tried to suppress insurgents and further angering the Iraqis, leading to a vicious cycle of more and more people joining the insurgency, an issue which continues to this day.

I'm pleased I read this book and will look out for further writings by Jamail.

A MUST READ!! EXTRAORDINARY AND DEEPLY MOVING!5
The voices of those suffering and dying partly because of the lies and omissions of our mainstream media.
Thank you so much Mister Jamail!
