Tournier's imagination runs wild. Try to keep up ...
Michel Tournier's collection of short stories demonstrates a fascinating, and occasionally disturbing imagination at work. For example, Cain is no longer the mindless killer of his brother, but a thoughtful architect and gardener. The Ogre from Tom Thumb is transformed into a peaceful hippy, while in 'Amandine ou les deux jardins', a young girl's cat leads her on a magical journey of discovery - into the garden next door. Guardian Angels even have a useful habit of hiding inside exploding pianos! Meanwhile, the 'Coq de Bruyère' of the title is a pompous baron who embarks on one love affair too many, to the temporary chagrin of his magnificently forthright wife. An excellent, often thought-provoking read.
