Hunter and Ralph go large in the South Sea's
Combine Hunter S Thompson's fluid gonzo style and Ralph Steadman's caustic art and you have an adventure book in the mould of Treasure Island (on acid).
Hunter covers a marathon in Hawaii and some how manages to press gang Ralph and his family into helping him figure out this 'running thing'. The site of several thousand Japanese running past Pearl harbour on the 7 December (the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbour) is not lost on our intrepid reporter. However, the marathon soon takes second place as Hunter embarks on a mad adventure that includes a cast of: fishermen, transvestites, real estate agents, the usual assortment of drug users and Lono (the Hawaiian god of excess and abundance).
This brilliantly underrated book is a must read for any Thompson fan and if your not a Thompson fan you soon will be once you read this book.
I would give this book ten stars if I could.
BRILLIANT
ha ha ha!
Bought this book expecting a normal sized paperback, but then.......a ginormous package arrived! My boyfriend eagerly tore it open (it was his birthday present) and inside found a hardback book of about 40cm x 30cm! Im goung to take great pleasure watching him trying to hold that above his head while reading at night! It's a great book, but I think it's more of a hommage to Ralph Steadmans art than Thompsons writing. Still, it's a great buy!
a must for HST fans
Christ, I've been trying to get hold of this book for 15 years and now it's here, hurrah! Quite simply one of the most beautiful books I have ever laid my hands on, it makes Bukowski's Black Sparrow Press editions look like cheap porn. As for the actual writing, while some of if is not prime 100% pure gonzo genius it's close enough and there are flashes of that old Thompson magic- the opening letter to Ralph Steadman being a good example. Put simply, if you like HST, buy this book- it will make you very happy indeed. Indeed.
