Customer Reviews
A thoroughly engrossing survey - prolifically illustrated .
This is a wonderfully entertaining and informative volume. Full of extraordinary illustrations, amazing facts, world-wide comparisons, stunning statistics and some very provocative essays. The city hasn't been dying while we flooded it with motor cars and surrounded it with out-of-town amenities - it has been transforming itself through the power of the consumer.
As well stimulating contributions from its distinguished editor, Rem Koolhaus, this compendium manages to rehabilitate Victor Gruen as the rediscoverer of genuine urban values, revisits Robert Venturi as the decoder of modern urban form and makes a convincing case that shopping will not only save the city but will constructively replace the civic institutions that originally gave the city purpose.
