One major failing...3
This dictionary does not include the Chinese characters for each word (just Yale pronunciation), therefore to my mind it is almost useless.

It is too advanced for anyone who may need phrase-book level Cantonese and it is too limited for students of the dialect. Students would need this book (for pronunciation), the Cantonese-English book (for reading) and a further English-Chinese dictionary for writing / checking (which would contain a load of useless Mandarin pronunciation). Three books! Mandarin students only need one!

I can't imagine why the publishers decided not to include the written form, especially as they also publish a Cantonese-English dictionary. Bizarre.

The Cypress dictionary contains the written form, but only in simplified Chinese, which has not really been adopted in Cantonese regions (this book also doesn't have Yale or Lau romanisation). There is a small, but perfectly formed hole in the market here...

Useful for intermediate to advanced students4
There are few good english-cantonese or cantonese-english dictionaries available. This is definitely one of the better ones. The multiple meanings and expressions given are especially good for building your vocabulary.

(note to previous reviewer: if you want english-yale-characters all in the one book, try titles from Greenwood Press (HK))
