Editorial Reviews
CD Description
From a previously unreleased 1961 recording of their first single "Surfin" to their 1988 #1, "Kokomo", GOOD VIBRATIONS collects everything anyone would want to hear by The Beach Boys. The first disc in this 5-disc set collects the sun and surf hits like "Barbara Ann" and "Fun, Fun, Fun" that summedup the mythical California dream for generations of Americans. While The Beach Boys certainly created some wonderful rock and roll in their 1962-1966 heyday, it's for the brilliant music on discs two and three that they have become rock legends.
These two CDs capture Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson at the peak of his powers, creating still-astounding singles like "Good Vibrations" and the incomparable, otherworldly PET SOUNDS album. One of the real highlights of GOOD VIBRATIONS is that it features many of the fascinating, previously unreleased songs recorded for the aborted SMILE--the legendary unreleased album that allegedly drove Brian Wilson to his 1967 nervous breakdown. Though The Beach Boys were never quite the same after SMILE, this near-perfect box set contains plenty of songs that prove there was much more to the band than Brian Wilson's fragile genius.
Customer Reviews
GREAT SET
I was turned on to the Beach Boys through all the glowing reviews Pet Sounds got. I now prefer that album to almost any Beatles, Byrds or any other 60's band you'd care to name. After that I bought the follow up albums Smiley Smile and Wild Honey and was surprised at how quickly one band can change and not always for the good.
This box set for me bridges the gap between Pet Sounds and the aforementioned Smiley Smile in that it includes material from the abortive Smile sessions and believe me are truly a step beyond Pet Sounds. They must be heard to be believed even in their supposedly unfinished state. The tracks pick up where Pet Sounds left off musically though lyrically and harmonically they are a whole new ball game from Pet Sounds or anything they had done before or since.
The tracks never saw release as intended in 1967 for a number of reasons detailed in Dominic Priore's book "Look, Listen, Vibrate, Smile". Some of it eg, Heroes and Villains sections even sounds more akin to Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention around 1969-70.
The whole box set is superb and well worth the price even for someone who is not a fanatic. Pretty much all if not most tracks are the best pick from all their 25 or so albums and there are also the usual extra bonus unreleased tracks such as the Smile stuff. Other highlights worth looking out for are the intricate instrumental tracks on disk 5 which show Brian Wilson's unsurpassed skills as Producer, arranger and writer.
A Boxed Set That Matters
A lot of boxed sets are little more than 'coffee table' CD collections. They have their greatest hits and a lot of filler and alternative versions (usually the same song with a different drum roll at the start).
This collection is a must for anyone who wants to get into the Beach Boys in that it contains all the hits plus tracks to treasure on every disk. Most importantly it contains the nearest 'official' approximation to the original Smile Album we're likely to get which perfectly compliments the recent re-recording Wilson made with The Wondermints. Add to this a bonus disk of great live and a cappella takes and a fascinating accompanying book and you've almost got an embarrassment of riches covering the whole gamut from Surfin' to Kokomo.
A treat.
If everybody had an ocean...
Magnificent is just one word I can use to describe this box set and I could easily write hundreds of essays in praise of this gorgeous box. In my opinion, it's the greatest box set ever released. It has ALL the hits, plenty of outtakes & best of all a good chunk of the lost masterpiece 'Smile'. It's guaranteed to make you swoon with delight once you've pressed play. 4 hours of blissful, moving & downright divine music that you will never get bored of hearing again and again.
Yes, it's a bit flawed in places (the latter part of CD4 doesn't hold up so well to everything else - the 80s & 90s weren't good to the band) but that's why programmeable facilities were invented on CD players. Other than that, it's just perfect. BUY IT NOW!
Oh, and by the way, the book's rather good too.
