Customer Reviews
many have passed but it's still the best
Take it from a man who has listened to not just all types of metal, but all types of music, intensely, for many many years..... this is one of the best albums you will find.
Up there with Carcass' Necrotism and Anathema's Serenades, if you do not have this album your collection has an almighty gap in it.
This album will grow on you...
I was initially quite disappointed with this album - having listened to Midian, I was unimpressed with Dani's rather monotonous rasping vocals. Over the weeks, however, this album spent more and more time in my CD player - it needs some effort to get into it, but once you're there, it rocks! The drumming on this CD is *AMAZING*; why is this sound not used anymore? The riffs are intricate and crisp, and suck you into the melodies; with the guitars very low in the mix, this creates a distinctive sound that emphasises the complex rhythms of songs like tracks 3, and 8. The epic, Grand-Guignol bombast of Midian is lacking, but the haunting, desolate synths of Summer Dying Fast and To Eve the Art of Witchcraft more than compensate. Also, am I alone in thinking that the ending of Summer Dying is just SOOOOOO beautiful? Buy this album. I won't say it's better or worse than Midian, just different.
I love...
...Dusk and Her Embrace and Cruelty and the Beast, but this will always be the first and the best. Of Mist and Midnight Skies, To Eve the Art of Witchcraft, The Forest Whispers my Name, Summers Dying Fast, Black Goddess Rises, each and every song of this is at once both haunting and ear burningly brutal. I have to agree with the other comments I have read, a completely outstanding album
