CD Description
Longtime Birthday Party and Bad Seeds gloom merchant Mick Harvey teams up with Anita Lane for an entire album's worth of Serge Gainsbourg covers, and the results are surprisingly pleasant. INTOXICATED MAN boasts 16 English-language renditions of Gainsbourg's late-'60s repertoire, including "Bonnie & Clyde", "Lemon Incest", and "69 Erotic Year", as well as the title cut.
Harvey's treatment of the French pop star'smaterial is reverent and completely devoid of the cheeky irony that one might expect from such an endeavor, while AnitaLane's airy and diffident vocals add a sensuality to the recordings that Brigitte Bardot herself would envy. Furthermore, Harvey's translations make Gainsbourg's wonderfully wittylyrics accessible to non-French speakers.
Customer Reviews
Not as funky as Serge, but a pretty good attempt anyway!
This is an interesting blend of the bizarre and beautiful hits of Serge Gainsbourg from the late 60's/70's translated into English for those of us who do not understand the French version I presume! Well worth a listen, especially if your music tastes are normally bland and uninspired. But if you're already turned on by quirky easy listening ballads then this may be a little mild for you. Favourite tracks include: Ford Mustang, Barrel of my 45, harley Davidson. I still prefer the originals but anything that invites people to check out Serge Gainsbourg is cool in my opinion!
