Amazon.co.uk Review
No surprises here. Issues, Korn's fourth album, is intense, misanthropic, depressed and a full-on raging metal beast. It mixes the power and distortion of their self-titled 1994 debut with the more melodic thrust of Follow The Leader. It will sell millions to disaffected fans all too able to identify with singer Jonathan Davis's disenchantment with life. This is one gloomy, antagonistic, sprawling monster of a record. On the bagpipe-laden "Dead", the gravel-throated vocalist roars "All I want is to be happy", while "Beg For Me" sees him pleading, "Please give me some of it back/The feelings that I had." The music is relentless; occasionally spooky ("Hay Daddy"), occasionally reminiscent of Led Zepellin's Eastern phase ("Somebody Someone"), but always unforgiving. Your parents definitely wouldn't approve. --Everett True
CD Description
The music of Korn speaks to those on the fringes of society. The band's trademark hip-core has evolved into a more clearly defined but equally urgent musical vision. Korn's sense of musical urgency and its ambition to make its mark on music is furthered with ISSUES.
"Beg for Me" is a track likely to incite the swirling pits at the band's legendary live shows. Showing that the group hasn't lost its down-to-earth sensibility, Korn invited fans to compete for the cover art of ISSUES, releasing versions featuring the winning piece as well as the efforts of three finalists. The emotional journey undergone by vocalist Johnathan Davis on tracks like "Hey Daddy" is truly strengthened by his movement away from his more abrasive vocal style and toward a more dominantly melodic approach. Davis digs more deeply into his tortured emotions on efforts such as "No Way", where he sings: "lately things aren't going my way / lately everything is gray / it feelslike something / it feels like nothing". That hazy emotional landscape is what strikes a responsive chord with Korn fans and makes ISSUES a landmark album.

Issues: Different, but all the better for it!
"Issues" is not the self-titled, nor is it "Life Is Peachy" or "Follow The Leader". Issues is an amalgamation of that triplet, with many new and amazing sounds thrown in for good measure. "Issues", overall, is fairly different to the other three albums, but it can easily be said that Korn have developed and expanded their sound noticeably with every new offering. This album should not be put down for being different to the other three, as it has elements that are easily linkable with them, but has many new, exciting and brilliant-sounding ideas in there. The album opens showcasing Jonathan's bagpipe playing abilities in "Dead", and stays consistantly different from everything else available throughout the entire album.
There are, it could be said, "typical" Korn songs in here, but none of them are without a sort of shine that is not present in any of the other albums. 4U, on the other hand, is a very different beast. This track sounds like nothing else produced by Korn, and might seem too tame or "strange" to some, but I believe it is one of the highlights of the album. "Hey Daddy" is another prime example; it sounds very different to any of their other works, but is the best track of the entire album in my opinion. Munky and Head put the trademark seven stringed guitars to good use throughout the track, and create some truly amazing-sounding sequences. Jonathan's vocal talents are also employed brilliantly, ranging from soft to heavy throughout the track, and a very effective distortion is placed upon his voice at one point. In fact, the whole group is put through their paces in this song, and come out sounding their best yet.
Jonathan is also on top form in the lyrics department, presenting us with the familiar emotions of hate, anguish, pain and sadness, which sounds through in many of the tracks. "Make Me Bad", a fairly "typical" Korn song, it could be said, is an excellent example of this, with a typically dark, sinister overtone.
"Issues" is standard Korn stuff; only more advanced! Korn are not ones to be known for their steadfastness - they're forever moving, forever developing. People who put this album down for not being like the self-titled need to take note of a comment by Head - they've moved on. These "fans" are not really fans of Korn, they are fans of hard metal. True Korn fans will see the brilliance, the genius of "Issues". It is a truly unique album, and has pride of place in my collection. Highly recommended, worth every penny.
brilliant
this album has a lot more soul and melody than its three predecessors and yet it still manages to carry over the emotion and in some parts, the anger of the first two albums. you can listen to this one however you like? sit back and relax or jump around and tear your hair out to lose some frustration. highlights on this album include falling away from me, trash, make me bad, no way and Dirty amongst many others. theres also the good old bag pipes thrown in for good measure. this is a brilliant album and korn fan or not, you cant go far wrong with this one.
The best Korn album made.
Korn release their fourth album and this one is the darkest. It may be said that the self titled album was the best, although 'issues' seems to better that with deep haunting riffs and emotional lyrics which seem to fit superbly together. There are many good tracks here, 'falling away from me' with the haunting guitars which grab your senses along with 'trash' 'make me bad' 'hey daddy' 'beg for me' 'somebody someone' 'wake up' 'lets get this party started' and lets not forget the last track 'dirty' which is also impressive. Along with these tracks comes short songs which some people may call fillers but the intro 'dead' sets a great starting point for the album along with haunting and dark anguished cries in tracks 4,7 and 9. There are a few weaker tracks 9 excellent ones more than merit this album with five stars. People may see Korn as a band for teenagers and the lyrics a commercial cry out. However, the lyrics are dark and deep and genuine and proves Korn stand out from the rest of quite frankly 'shoddy' nu metal bands. The album has great choruses along with the threatening dark riffs where the album can genuinely make you r emotions change to suit this album. So seeing as i bought this album for £1.50 on here second hand, i feel it was the best £1.50 ever spent!
