Amazon.co.uk Review
Not a John F Kennedy biopic, but a film of New Orleans' attorney Jim Garrison's investigation into the President's assassination, JFK is that rarest of things, a modern Hollywood drama which credits the audience with serious intelligence and ultimately proves itself a great film. Oliver Stone's film has the archetypal story, visual scale and substance to match; not just a gripping real-life conspiracy thriller, but a fable for the fall of the American dream (a theme further explored by the director in Nixon and Any Given Sunday). JFK doesn't reveal exactly what happened in Dallas on 22 November 1963--those who knew generally took their secrets to the grave--but marshals a vast wealth of facts and plausible theories, trusting the audience to draw its own conclusions. Following less than a year after Dances With Wolves (1990), these two epics mark the high point of Kevin Costner's career and the vast supporting cast here, including Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland, is superb. Quite simply the best American political film ever made. --Gary S Dalkin

Synopsis
Oliver Stone's self-proclaimed 'countermyth', JFK mocks the doubtful veracity of the Warren Commission's findings on the Kennedy assassination and summarizes some of the myriad theories that have been proposed in its stead. Focusing on the investigation by New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison into the activities of the FBI and other government agencies as well as their attempted cover-ups, Stone weaves fact and speculation into a compelling argument for the reopening of the case files.

Stunning
A brilliant, clever, exciting picture. What people forget is that it's a "FICTIONAL FILM" Oliver Stone has never said its real. I believe it but thats just me. A stunning picture
If you believe the Warren Commission...get a guide dog
First off, I will state that this is a fabulous piece of film-making. The direction is strong, the period recreation is amazing, the editing is mind-blowing, and the cast is phenomenal...particularly Gary Oldman as Lee Harvey Oswald. His performance is right on key and he looks incredibly similar to Oswald...just as he looked like Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy" and Ludwig Van Beethoven in "Immortal Beloved." Oldman is a chameleon who can seemingly look like anyone. He becomes the characters that he plays, and his turn as Oswald is no exception. Now...on to the substance of the film. This film is not 100% accurate, nor does it purport to be anything other than an educated guess as to what MAY have happened in Dallas on November 22, 1963. It is, however, leaps and bounds ahead of the Warren Commission Report, which isn't even believable in the slightest. I may not be convinced that this film's vision of the truth (based on books by Jim Garrison and Jim Marrs) is the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but I've done my own research and I find it to be far closer to a believable theory than that proposed by the Warren Commission, whose report was...let's face facts, America...pure fiction. Anyone who believes that lone nut Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK needs to take his or her blinders off and start living in the real world. Still, one cannot say that Oswald (one of the most fascinating characters in American history) was not capable of amazing feats...like simultaneously being active in the Soviet Union and the United States...though that's easily explained when one takes the time to find a copy of the memo sent from J. Edgar Hoover himself to the Department of State on June 3, 1960, which reads in part "Since there is the possibility that an imposter is using Oswald's birth certificate, any current information the Department of State may have concerning the subject will be appreciated." There you have it...as far back as 1960, there were at least two Lee Harvey Oswalds running around. Not to mention that the LHO who was treated for tonsillitis twice during his stint with the Marines was obviously not the LHO who had his tonsils removed at the age of six. Nor was the LHO who had a 3-inch mastoidectomy scar behind his ear and a gunshot scar on his elbow the same LHO who was autopsied after being gunned down by Jack Ruby. There were AT LEAST two Oswalds active at the time of JFK's assassination...and many eyewitnesses have stated that they saw the police escorting Lee Harvey Oswald out of the rear exit of the Texas Theatre at the very same time that the Lee Harvey Oswald who was charged with JFK's murder was being led out the front. It is, therefore, possible that while Oswald's double (who is said to have resembled the real Oswald a great deal) may have been involved in the assassination and killed officer J.D. Tippitt, the real Oswald was taken into custody, while his double was led out the back of the very same theatre and set free. At any rate, there is a wealth of information out there, waiting to be discovered. My advice is to watch this brilliant film, but not to take it at face value. While you're at it, read up on the assassination. Start with "Crossfire" by Jim Marrs, and once you've made it through that lengthy volume, move onto other independent research. Much can even be found on the internet, including Armstrong's detailed outlines of the existence and movements of the two Oswalds...up to and including the day of the assassination. Gather all of the information and decide for yourself. But don't swallow the answers that are being force-fed to you...because almost invariably, they're lies.
Good Stone Conspiracy Theory Movie
Films like this really come along rarely, the type of film which is both engaging, well- paced and based on historical fact. Though the introduction may seem too slow a start for some people, I cannot find a single flaw in this film. The cinematography was excellent, earning the film one of its two Oscars and the acting was brilliant. Kevin Costner is very much on form and so is his support cast most notably, for me at least, Gary Oldman as Lee Harvey Oswald who really excels at showing the different aspects of the character as the film develops.
With the director's cut coming in at 3 hrs 18 mins, it may be slightly too long, but with a powerful story line this is not noticed as much as one might expect. Another frequent criticism is that the theories brought forward in the film are unfeasible, however they did not diminish the viewing experience for me and the twist scene, including Donald Sutherland(Yay!) was particularly strong.
Perhaps what is most noticeable and memorable is the use of old footage of events and black and white flash backs, both used to great effect throughout the film. As the film draws to a close with Costner's searing monologue, chances are you'll find yourself believing in all that he says.
