Amazon.co.uk Review
The first of the now-famous Tomb Raider games is a must-have for every gaming fan. You are Lara Croft, a tough, beautiful, sophisticated female Indiana Jones--think of a British Demi Moore in a fedora. Lara climbs walls, leaps chasms, and generally defies gravity using impressive gymnastics. All of her actions are intricately modelled to produce the life-like athleticism that made Tomb Raider--and Lara Croft--famous.
But Lara's got more than good looks and smooth moves to help her on her globetrotting quest for relics. Like guns. Lots of guns. Lara begins her adventures with her trademark pistols, wielded John-Woo-style: one in each hand. She eventually works her way up to Uzis and even adds a handy shotgun to her arsenal, perfect for taking down a troublesome tyrannosaurus found in some steamy Tibetan lost world.
Here's the story: having made a name for herself as a finder of antiquities, Lara is hired by a mysterious woman to find an artifact believed to have come from Atlantis. Lara travels around the world, plumbing the depths of long- or best-forgotten locales. As she discovers clues to the artifact's whereabouts, she also uncovers the true motivation behind her employer's search. The intriguing plot is told through gorgeous computer animation movie-cut scenes interspersed throughout the game's episodes.
As you venture to and through various ancient tombs, a host of enemies and puzzles await you. In fact, it is the puzzles that will keep players interested even after the challenge of slaying enemies has passed. Also hidden throughout the game are a number of secret rooms and hidden treasures, unnecessary for completion of the game but adding a level of complexity and replay value. Being one of the few video game characters to grace mainstream magazine covers, Lara Croft is part of video game history. --Allen Stewart
Manufacturer's Description
Adventurer Lara Croft has been hired to recover the pieces of an ancient artefact known as the Scion. With her fearless acrobatic style she runs, jumps, and swims her way toward the truth of it's origins and powers--leaving only a trail of empty tombs and gun-cartridges in her wake. On this trail are the most breath-taking 3-D worlds yet seen--where exploration, puzzle and platform elements blend in a seamless real-time environment.

Tomb Raiding is just addictive
The first and the best! When I first bought TR I didn't know a thing about Lara or Tomb Raiding but I soon learned and 10 years on I still play the game on rainy sundays and sleepy saturday afternoons. I can't say that about any other game I own. They should be giving a copy of this away with the remake so that everyone can judge the two together.
I like the controls, simple and straight forward ... leap and shoot, walk and wonder.I have a hard time with PS2's little joysticks and often long for the D-Pad.
Graphically it's ancient now but the sense of wonder has never left me. Lara's puzzles will keep you head-scratching and coming back for more time and time again. Lets hope that anniversary lives up to it. This is the best game I have ever played.
Superb
Christmas 1998. At the tender age of 27, as a present to myself I bought a PlayStation, and the game that came with it was Tomb Raider. I was vaguely aware of the game's iconic status, which is why I chose it, but never having been an avid gamer, that was the limit to my knowledge.
And so began two weeks or so of very late nights. Painfully aware that I was in serious danger of joining the ranks of pasty, spotty adolescents with poor social skills, I was completely absorbed by this game and played it doggedly until I finished it.
Of course, the many sequels were technically superior, with improving graphics, sound, gameplay and abilities, but nothing will ever beat the original. As a novice gamer who had previously been happy enough with a Gameboy from time to time, this was a magnificent introduction. The signature theme tune that accompanies the menu screen, before you even enter the training level, is atmospheric enough to whet the appetite for the epic adventure that follows.
And of course, unlike much of her subsequent adventures, in this game Lara actually lives up to the title and raids some tombs.
The sheer scale of this game, and the buckets of atmosphere each level creates, is impressive even now, despite the already dated state of the graphics. And there is no shortage of surprises. As I played the Lost Valley level for the first time, I had barely time to recover from being attacked by a pair of raptors (which caught me off-guard) when I found myself being stalked by a T-Rex. Of course, the huge footprints should have alerted me, but I was so drawn into this superbly rendered 3D world that I didn't even notice.
Another favourite of mine is the way the virtual camera pulls right back as you maneuvre Lara to the foot of the giant Sphinx - again showing the sheer scale and upping the atmosphere level considerably. Jaw-dropping moments like this were noticeably absent from the sequels.
The puzzles, whilst not massively taxing, do require a little more than casual thought and are very entertaining, even if they can sometimes drive you up the wall with frustration until the fairly obvious solution presents itself and makes you feel a bit stupid for missing it..! I should point out that I was disappointed to find that a few of these puzzles cropped up again in exactly the same form in Tomb Raider 2.
Another nice touch is the function which allows the player, after completing the game, to enter any level they wish with access to all weapons and unlimited ammo. It's fun to return to earlier levels with more powerful weaponry for a quicker playing time.
So, having become something of an occasional gamer, and having since upgraded to a PlayStation 2, this remains my favourite game of all time. The sequels, although mostly great, simply cannot compare. And, fond as I am of the Tomb Raider franchise, I find it slightly disturbing that there are people out there who actually harbour sexual thoughts about Lara... What on earth is all that about?! Get real!
To coin an oft-used cliche, this is the game that started a revolution. It's easy to see why. Despite the sequels and imitators, it remains in a class all of its own. It may look rather primitive by comparison, but it is a foolish person indeed who would dismiss it on those terms. This is an essential part of any gamer's collection, be they hardcore or occasional gamers like myself.
