Therapy for the ears!4
As far as movie soundtracks go, I've always given them a wide berth......though after reading, then watching the movie, I decided to give this soundtrack a go. It offers a wide variety of musical styles, and is often easy on the ears. If you happen to be a fan of anything heavy. perhaps the fatal flaws in this album are that a couple of songs are more than too long, and this may give the whole album a monotonous, repetitive feel, that belies the overall skill of the album. Undoubtedly the best feature is the construction of the album, and the playlist, with monologues from the film nicely worked in. As far as soundtracks go, this is a subtle, flavoured album, with enough variety for anyone to listen to. As for fans of the film, and/or book, they will find that this CD offers the sounds of the film, and will satisfy even the most critical soundtrack hater. 4 out of 5, as I mentioned earlier, as a couple of the tracks are longer than they need to be.

Not what you'd expect if you read ....3
As a film soundtrack, this CD is better than most. I am a "Dead or Alive" purist and consider the ridiculous cover of "You Spin Me Round" to be otiose and flat. You can't better the original.

The problem is that if you read the book you expect so much more. The point of Bateman is that he is obsessed with fab 80s pop trash. He doesn't listen to grunge/house/dance, heck, GENRE music, which this album is full of.

Bret Easton Ellis' book soundtrack runs thus:

INXS - Devil Inside *

Belinda Carlisle - I Feel Free * INXS - New Sensation * Huey Lewis & The News - anything from "Sports" CD * Whitney Houston - How Will I Know? * Genesis - Invisible Touch

I guess the director couldn't get the licence, and compromised accordingly.

Nonethless, worth buying.

Great but lengthy4
This album was brilliant. The songs were well picked and interspersed with Bale's monologues as the psycho. However, I found some of the monologues a bit long and with the CD clocking in at nearly two hours it's not a question of being bored but needing to move about and listen to something other than the throwback 80s music. The 'American Psycho' remixes were brilliant. A great album for those who love the film.
