Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Now that every hard-rocker under the sun has embraced rap and industrial, you'd think that musical innovation would be rife. Sadly, all that's happened is that fat, bald, tattooed men have usurped centre stage, spraying us with sweat and spittle as their buddies bore us senseless with their staccato riffology. The dumbing-down of rock appears relentless. Thank God, then, for Soulfly. With Sepultura's Roots, singer/guitarist Max Cavalera broke new ground with his rich mix of crushing metal and ethnic tribalism. With Soulfly, now aided and abetted by Mikey Doling from the notorious Snot, he pushes further. Absurdly heavy riffs abound, but all eventually disintegrate, to be replaced by an awesome vocal barrage ("Pain"), melancholic reggae ("Bring It"), even snatches of subdued, indie-style balladeering ("Jumpdafuckup"). The range is extraordinary, and all the more so for the wildly varying guests. There's Slayer's Tom Arraya, the Deftones' Chino Moreno, Will Haven's Grady Avenell, Slipknot's Corey Taylor and, amazingly, Sean Lennon (on "Son Song", an anthem for orphans). Like Black Sabbath at their best, Soulfly make music that's beautiful, strange and remorselessly heavy. Primitive is a revelation, again. --Dominic Wills

CD Description
To say that Sepultura fans were saddened by the departure of Max Cavalera would be a gross understatement. Max's loyal following skeptically received Soulfly's debut while remaining Sepultura members forged ahead with a replacement vocalist. With PRIMITIVE, it's apparent that Cavalera's "new tribe"isn't a rebound side project.
Max and company continue the brutal groovecore assault and stretch even further into experimental realms. The reggae-soaked breakdown in "Bring It" and bittersweet vocal harmonies in "Son Song" (featuring Sean Lennon) are surprises you'd be hard pressed to find on aSepultura album. Fitting guest vocalists including Slipknot's Corey/#8 and Slayer's Tom Araya, who bring challenging contrasts to PRIMITIVE.

Customer Reviews

Fire, passion, vocals, talent, but it just don't work for me3
A strong line up including the biggest name in metal of the time, Primitive goes there, does it, but somehow fails to deliver the goods.

The riffs are hard and Sepultura-esque, and Max Cavalera still has the driving angst and genuine passion of the classic Seps days. Yet throughout there seems to be a desire to experiment, diversify, and try new styles, probably borne out of a fear that the old formula isn't quite working now.

It's a damn shame, because the result is an over-length record that doesn't make a mark, has a lot of indistinct tracks and is a bit forgettable.

Probably there are those who disagree, but I'm hoping something new comes into the equation to liven Soulfly up to something like the expectations we had when Sepultura split.

Soulfly f**cking rule!!5
Holy s**t!! From "Back to the Primtive" the album is an explosion of passion and energy. Phenomenal tribal drumming and heavy as f**k guitars combined with that voice of Max's. I saw them live at Ozzfest 2001 in the UK and they blew me away. Intense rhythms and detuned guitars bring out the best from the grandfather of metal - he brought the music with him from Sepultura and has kept improving. The respect he has is shown by the other guys who sing on the CD. Tom Araya from Slayer, Chino Moreno from Deftones, Grady Avenall from Will Haven and of course, contributing on one of the best tracks ever - Corey Taylor from Slipknot. If you like Sepultura, Slipknot or any loud s**t with class rhythms then check out Soulfly!!

the best metal album ever5
This album is probably one of the best Metal CD's I've got . After listening to Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit , KoRn and Slipknot I found that this is an album you should have in your CD collection if you're into metal. This album has so many great tracks like "PAIN", "BACK TO THE PRIMITIVE", "SON SONG" and "BOOM". It also has a belting track "JUMP DA F**K UP" with lead singer from Slipknot Corey Taylor. Soulfly have really given a great performance on this album with heavy guitar and bass riffs, amazing drum and percussion ,brilliant vocals, unexpected changes in each song , and when it all comes together it is an experience which everyone should be able to hear. There are no bad points to this and there is an added bonus of added tracks. My advice to Metal fans is you should get this album, its brilliant!
