Amazon.co.uk Review
You get top-class colour pictures from the HP Deskjet 940c Colour Printer. This inkjet is designed for those looking for a little something extra from their printer. The 940c certainly looks rather fetching. The paper tray sits underneath the output tray which helps keep things compact. It has what all printers should have, a one-touch cancel button. There's nothing as frustrating as watching your printer chew needlessly through ink and paper because you mistakenly selected "Print". The 940c is aimed at those looking for high-quality output and is capable of a very impressive printing resolution of 1,200 by 2,400. This is wasted however on normal paper, like all inkjets you need to match it with special photo paper. The results are excellent, crisp and with accurate graduated colour tones. Even without special paper the 940c manages a notably superior output. Black text is good too, although the printer has clearly been aimed at producing colour graphics over black text. The excellent colour images will eat through your ink cartridges though, so it is worth saving the highest resolutions for when you really need them. Printing speed is only average, generally not a problem with home use where a minute or two extra isn't a big issue. The results are certainly well worth waiting for anyway. HP has an impressive "Getting Started CD-ROM" which goes through each step making it easy for a novice to get up and running. The software interface looks basic, HP has kept things simple, but it does all the tricks you expect of a modern colour printer such as printing posters and you've a full range of adjustments under the "Advanced options" tab. As well as delivering high-quality output, the 940c has been designed to cope with a more demanding workload. If you're main area of concern is outputting the best possible colour images then HP's 940c has to be high on your list of candidates. --Miles Berkeley

    Stunning home printer5
Having just upgraded from a HP 693C, this printer is a stunning change and shows just how many advances in printer technology have been made over the last couple of years. The drivers installed quickly without trouble on Win98SE/ME/2K (using a USB connection). During use the printer is exceptionally quiet and extremely fast with text, although slower when printing photos it's still one of the fastest in this price range. The photo output of the printer is excellent and I haven't even used the HP injet paper provided as output on standard paper is perfectly acceptable. When loaded with paper the paper goes in almost to the back of the printer meaning that it doesn't protrude beyond the the printers footprint this is a great improvement over older deskjet designs where I would find the paper would get battered or knocked out of the printer if overhanging the edge of a desk.
Construction of the printer is exceptionally well designed and solid, it's pretty weighty but it is a desk printer and besides it doesn't shake about while printing as a result. Print speed isn't as high as the manufacturer's specs but with raw text printing after an initial 10 seconds of data transmission the printer is easily spurting out pages at close to 10ppm. The 940C comes with 2MB of memory, with memory prices so low these days it would be nice to see much higher buffers, but with most OS's providing print spooling and the speed of the USB connection I have never encountered the printer stopping to wait for the rest of a page to arrive.
Overall this printer is perfect for the home and indeed any small office and worth the extra over the shoddy entry level printers that typically come free with PC's these days. So for just over a £100 it's a bargain and a quality HP one at that. (Though don't forget to buy a USB or parallel cable as one is not provided in the box).

    The Deskjet 940c5
Hewlett Packard have always been renowned for producing quality printers and the Deskjet 940c is no exception. Boasting 2400 x 1200 dpi photo quality output, it's results put some far more expensive printers to shame. Printing at the highest resolution is a bit on the slow side, but for a small drop in quality the printer can use PhotoREt technology to produce photos of adequate quality.
Text output is also excellent with no blurred edges and a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi.
The printer comes supplied with some good entry level software for the digital camera or scanner user, and while the enthusiast would want more from their software, it represents a good easy to use introduction.
Overall well worth 5 stars, suitable for anyone who only needs output to A4 size, and excellent value for money.

    so far so good...4
So far I've been impressed with this (my first) printer, it seems to do all that I ask of it. However two slight downsides, one my pc didnt recognise it at first through the USB port when setting it up, tried other USB devices and they worked fine - had to use parallel connection instead. Also bear in mind if you are alittle tight for desk space the permanent paper tray at the front. That said I would recommend this printer to those who want a relatively cheap all purpose printer. There may well be better printers around but I dont feel cheated having bought this one.
(Oh and I use mine fairly often and its never jammed on me)
