Adobe has taken GoLive, its Web design and management tool, and improved the integration with other applications, adding in a number of useful extras in the process.

GoLive is Adobe's Web site designer--a bit like a DTP program for Web pages. As well as the design elements of the program, though, there are sections devoted to Web site management and to maintaining a complex site, when several people in a workgroup may be working on it together.

The main working area of the program looks much like other Adobe applications, deliberately so to make moving between them easy. The main editing windows float on the GoLive worktop, with palettes of functions controlling the tools. Palette "tabs" can now be dragged and "stashed" individually at the edge of the screen.

The key new features of GoLive 6.0 can be divided into three areas. Under Design and Develop comes greatly improved table handling, with new editing features--particularly selection--and increased control of HTML code. Adobe has taken the opportunity to integrate GoLive more closely with Photoshop, Illustrator and LiveMotion, too. So, for instance, the new program can handle layers and slices in images.

Manage functions govern how different versions and revisions are handled, when you have several people working on aspects of the same site. The revision list is a good example of this, offering full details of who made which changes to what, when.

Finally, there's Deploy, when you finally launch your site. Here there's new or improved support for WML authoring, writing for display on WAP devices, XML, QuikTime, in fact most of the growing family of Web standards. GoLive 6 is a worthwhile improvement if you're thinking of upgrading, but is only for the serious first-timer...this is a heavyweight tool. --Simon Williams
