I have to admit I am no expert in Japanese music or culture, but I have been listening to a variety of Japanese music after a few wonderful visits to Japan.

In some of his other works Takemitsu has mixed Japanese and Westerm classical music - bringing the sounds of Japanese instruments using flutes, harps etc in a Western classical setting.

This CD, however, strips away all the Western influences and presents sparse, empty, delicate, surprising music.
The sort of thing that you find yourself only half-listening to, and then suddenly a new theme or motif appears from the background - catches your attention and you move on.

It is more a feeling than a sound. The Japanese garden with its echoes of the bamboo forests, the mountain streams, the ordered patterns of swirling gravel, the silence broken by the wind in the leaves, the drifting delicate mist weaving through the trees - these are all hinted at by this music.

I think this music is beautiful, but hard to grasp. I couldn't tell you what any of the pieces sound like or even hum you a bit - a strange combination of background sound tapestry with hints, visions and impressions of nature. Wonderful for the imagination...
