Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Metal fans appreciate merchandise that's as extravagant as the music is heavy. And Iron Maiden's Eddie's Archive--a "metal" (OK, tin) box, with a bas-relief, red-eyed Eddie mascot on its lid and a gothic, pewter-based shot glass with a glowering Eddie on the bottom--is indeed a nice bit of heavy metal. Nestled inside are three two-CD sets, comprising 88 live songs, as well as "family tree" scroll secured with a metal Eddie ring.

As usual with Maiden's prolific live output, Eddie's Archive contains uniformly excellent recordings. The first set, "The BBC Archives", chronicles four concerts conducted between 1979 and 1988; it serves up expected hits including "Run to the Hills" and "The Trooper", the first four songs of Disc One featuring original singer Paul Di'Anno. The penultimate offering, "Beast Over Hammersmith", recorded in 1982, features stellar screamer (and longtime vocalist) Bruce Dickinson, who replaced Di'Anno in late 1981.

The gem of Eddie's Archive, however, is "Best of the B'Sides", which features 31 tunes (mostly studio recordings), including awesome covers of Jethro Tull's "Cross-Eyed Mary", Golden Earring's "Kill Me Ce Soir", two Montrose songs and cuts originally done by Chuck Berry and Led Zeppelin--as well as such obscure bands as Nektar and Beckett. "B'Sides" is almost worth the price of admission, though the package's "stash" box and shot glass are musts for militant Maiden devotees. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews

a must for maiden fans5
As a Maiden fan I must give Eddie's Archive five stars because it really is a treasure trove. If perhaps not an essential buy for the uninitiated, it is a must have for avid collectors of all things Maiden. The 'BBC Archives' CD highlights the band's development from the early days to the dizzy heights of the 1988 Donington 'Monsters of Rock' show. The 1979 session and early Reading live recordings, featuring Paul Di'Anno, reveal the raw energy and massive potential which captivated rock fans looking to wrestle the balance of power from punk. The second Reading live recording, featuring the newly installed Bruce Dickinson, reveals a tighter Maiden ready to take on the world and preparing to unleash the watershed 'Number of the Beast' album. The Donington show gives us a glimpse of Maiden arguably at the height of their powers, musically consumate with the audience in the palm of their hands. Those wishing to own the definitive Maiden live record should perhaps look to 'Live After Death' or 'Rock in Rio' first, but hardcore Maiden fans will find this double CD fascinating. The '..B Sides' album contains some brilliant tracks. check out 'I've Got The Fire', 'Cross Eyed Mary' and a pretty faithful rendition of 'Doctor Doctor' for instance. There are also a few live gems here such as 'The Aftermath' and Bruce singing the Blaze era 'Futureal'. There are one or two throwaway numbers present, such as 'Nodding Donkey Blues' and 'Roll over Vic Vella', which gain inspiration from in-jokes rather than having mass appeal. But the musical quality and interest value of this material overall makes it an excellent addition to any Maiden collection. The real treasure for me in this set is the 'Beast Over Hammersmith' CD. A full show from the 1982 tour featuring the band in ferocious form. Maiden really go for it. The explosive 'Killers' and the opener 'Murders in the Rue Morgue' thunder along. Bruce, being seen for the first time by many fans since taking over from Paul Di'Anno, pulls out all the stops. His vocal range soars as he goes for, and hits, notes which in later years, as the constant world tours took their toll, he couldn't quite reach, or maybe thought twice about attempting (see the 'Donington' show on the 'BBC Archives' CD!). The sound quality of this recording is also excellent, and although snippets of this show have surfaced in various forms over the years (as B sides, or on the '12 Wasted Years' video, for example) the release of 'Beast over Hammersmith' is long overdue. As definitive live albums go, this probably ranks up there with the aforementioned 'Live After Death' and 'Rock in Rio' albums.
The packaging of this collection is sumptuous, and while it won't nestle neatly in most CD racks, the intricate tin box makes an interesting piece of objet d'art in its own right. In short Eddie's Arcgive is a must for Miaden fans.

Iron Miden, still the best!!!5
The foirst thing that you see is the casket. It has Eddies head on the to and sets the mood perfectly for what is about to come. When you open the casket you see the cds, glass and scroll. The glass shands on metal feet. These make it quite wieghty. But this is not a bad thing. When you look down the glass you can see Eddies head. Its amazing and it even has red glass eyes. The scroll is held in place by a ring. the ring has yet another Eddie head. You can really wear the ring unfrunately unless you have z+4 or maybe bigger fingers which is a shame. The scroll is a family tree style page that shows the history of the band by linking in who was in it and where they came from and when to. Now to the main part of the collection, the CDs. They all have a wonderful full colour booklet that tells you lots about the recordings. The BBC archives is very good. It has the ledgendary Monsters of Rock live concert. This is very good. Recorded around the time of seventh son. It also has 2 live shows with Paul Diano. These are much better than I 1st thought. I hadent heard anything with him on but now it has made me consider getting his 2 Maiden albums. The 2nd CD is Beast Over Hammersmith. the whole 2cds are taken up with this. The concert was beween the release of Run to the Hills (single) and Number of the Breast (album. This is a very good proformance from Bruce. There is a lot of energy from him and this sets up Number of the Beast great. The 3rd CD is a slight let down. Its Best Of B-Sides. THe Main problem wiht it is that is dosent feel like like the songs are conected, but htis is not to say that the songs are good they just dont feel roght as a collection. They track Iron Maidens history very well and are good for people who dont buy the singles that would have missed out on the b-sides.
The bigest complaint that I have with the collection is that its a lot of old songs. If you are expecting newer songs the newest one are from Seventh Son. But this is still an amazing collection of classic Iron Maiden and a must for all Maiden fans and metal fans.
Up the Irons!!!!!!!

Iron Maiden have done it again - OUTSTANDING5
Ever since the band started out on the pub circuit of London, they have set out to give the fans what they want, an in-your-face, exciting Metal band. Eddies Archive is a real gift to Maiden fans all over the world, and can only be described as a MUST for your Maiden Collection.

From the moment you open the Cardboard shipping packaging, and gaze your eyes on the casket for the first time, you know that you are in for nothing other than sheer quality. The addition of the Shot Glass, and the Family Tree (Individually numbered) Scroll makes this even more special.

Maiden fans around the world have been waiting for years for the recordings that lay in the "Vault" to be unearthed, and now the chance to own them in a unique collection is here. In my eyes they have been very generous on the price tag, because this set will for many fans, be the centrepiece of their collection!

Well done Maiden, you have done it again! - Brilliant!
