Bit Pants
It seems that when the Avengers went from monochrome to colour, things went on the slide. The later Emma Peel episodes are inferior to the first series and the story lines got dafter. Ths slide continues with the introduction of Linda Thorson and this was not helped by the fact that she did not have the acting capabilities of her predecessors and her character was generally a bit weak and vulnerable by comparison. Also Steed was a bit full on with Tara King - with Emma Peel in particular, a large part of the fun was the fact that the personal side of their relationship was only hinted at, and largely left to the imagination.
That said, Patrick Macnee continues to excel and this set is probably a better way of passing a few hours than most of the dross that is on telly today.
A new partner....
Despite all of the negative comments Linda Thorson got when she joined the Avengers, who could, honestly do a better job than Diana Rigg??! She got a rough deal, was a little inexperienced and had to fill very big shoes- if you remove all of that, I think the character was a welcome addition. She was different to both of the partners before, and they played the inexperienced agent as part of the show, some of the story lines were a bit out there, but hey, it was the 60's and who knows what they were all on at the time! The Avengers, from beginning to end gets my thumbs up every time, despite the partner. Buy this box set, it's The Avengers for goodness sake!!! :)
