At a stroke, Xara Webstyle solves two of the biggest problems facing Web designers. Firstly, it delivers a library of hundreds of superb, editable graphics, including logos, buttons, headings, bullets, dividers, navbars, menus and even banner adverts. Secondly, it provides easily understood statistical information about each finished graphic, including its size and how long it'll take to download at a given connection speed. The result is a program that's perfect for people who want good-looking Web sites but can't (or don't have time) to create their own graphics.

For example, if you need a logo you just click the logo button on the opening screen and select a logo from the library. You can then add your own text in any font and with any emphasis, change the colour of both the text and the logo, add a background, a texture or a drop shadow (these are beautiful and very simple) and change its size. When you've finished you can preview the graphic in your browser before saving it. The process is similar for each kind of graphic, so having learned how to choose and then tailor a 3-D heading or banner advert, you know how to do the same for dividers and buttons.

Probably the cleverest collections are of navbars and menus. You can create menus that change colour or display sub-menus when the mouse rolls over them. Changing both the look and the content of these menus is again very simple. It's also worth mentioning the photo feature. In a few simple steps this can produce auto-expanding thumbnails (tiny pictures that, when clicked, display a full-sized version in a separate window).

You can incorporate your finished graphics into any Web design program but Webstyle is tightly integrated with Microsoft's FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver, appearing on the insert menu of both programs. The professional's secret
For someone new or uncertain of their design skills, this web element and menu creator is a wonder. With one or two exceptions (and it's a personal taste thing), the designs are very attractive and can be coordinated with many of the elements from the other designs on offer - there's great mix and match potential, literally millions of possible variations and combinations. Like other Xara products, the interface is easy and intuitive. Even my small son can produce a glorious set of web graphics in about ten minutes (he's four).

But to limit praises of this program to its usefulness to amateurs and enthusiasts, is to do it a great disservice. I am not afraid to come out of the closet. I am a Webstyle user. Yes, even though I am a professional content designer. Yes, even though I am experienced in graphic design.

This versatile program deserves a place in any professional toolbox. Yes, some websites need a very special artistic touch, but most involve standard elements. Why spend hours churning out banners and buttons, especially for mock ups or proposals, when the ultra-customisable Webstyle will do it for you - in any colour, any size, and any background? And with state-of-the-art, matching DHTML menus!

Professionals who say to me - "but all graphics will look the same as everyone else's" - obviously haven't opened Webstyle. Let a pro loose on the program for half an hour, and the results look like six days hard labour in Photoshop. If you know what you are doing, and spend the time applying your design knowledge, it will reward you with spectacular results in record time. Webstyle really does offer a new way of working.

This version of the program introduced an image editor, and I find myself having to turn less and less to photo editing programs because of it. You can adjust, crop and resize your photos at the same time as making the other elements of your Webstyle design. Extremely handy. And you get that wonderful vibrant and crisp look to your finished images that is the hallmark of all Xara-made graphics.

For the price, it's a total bargain, especially when you consider that you get a menu maker thrown in, and a photo editing suite! And a logo maker. And an animated banner maker. And free fonts (including *the* most useful dingbat font ever). And... and a lot more. It's great. It's home made - the very best of British programming. I highly recommend it.

So simple, so great
Simplicity really is the key world with Webstyle. If you can't draw graphics very well, or just don't have the time, Webstyle is great.

You just type in what you want, mess around with the colours, then easily export. It helps you from the beginning to the end to get the best results for a website.

Considering it can do banners, buttons, menus, logos and so much more, the price is VERY good value. You can literally just play for hours on end.

Xara Webstyle is a very useful program for making Web Graphics. It is very simple, just choose a design and then you can edit it. You can make nav bars, buttons, ads, 3D Headings and more. This is the most useful program I Have used.
