todd weaves his magic5
This Shinin` On album produced by Todd Rundgren is a dam fine rock album. Were an American band 2. everything you could want from grand funk, Mark Farners guitar work is some of his best,Mark Don Mel and Craig cook and the kitchen is hot! One track the Locomotion is what I would call the inevitable filler can be over looked although the bass is seriously beefed up.My favourite has to be Little Johnny Hooker, the whole song rocks and the guitar is superb! also one studio out take I wish had been on the LP Destitute and Losin, all marvelous stuff!Try it!

GF SHINE ON4
In March 1974 GF released 'Shinin' On'. Another big departure.

Less rock and more pop. But I like it nonetheless.

The lead track makes a clear statement of what's in store - keyboards, disco-esque slap beat and a 'swishy/swooshy' sound on the overall mix.

To Get Back In has a dynamic vocal intro which plunges explosively into the song with a strong soul vibe, including horns throughout. One of my favourites.

The Loco-Motion is an ok cover which confirms the accessible / commercial approach GF are now firmly headed in.

Carry Me Through is more like it. Plenty of keyboards and a haunted feel. A driving, rock backbone and strong Brewer vocal lifts this one to a higher plane. Excellent.

Please Me is another high. Strong, fast and kind-of poppy but much, much more. Another favourite.

Mr Pretty Boy is excellent. Dirty blues. Well sung by Mark Farner.

Getting' Over You is fast and a little furious.

Little Johnny Hooker is an aggressive blues track. Great guitar and drums with a marvellous Mark Farner vocal. A great finish to the album.

Destitute And Losing' is a bonus track in the blues mode which sounds a little experimental.

Best tracks : To Get Back In, Carry Me Through, Mr Pretty Boy, Little Johnny Hooker

Best left alone : The Loco Motion (the original is best)

Overall, a big departure, with some really strong songs which are also commercial.
