Synopsis
This 2-Disc release is the first Stone Roses DVD. The first disc contains 6 promotional videos, and an hour long live recording from Blackpool in 1989. The second disc features 7 classic television performances, as well as two live performances at the Hacienda, as well as an exclusive interview and behind-the-scenes footage taken during the making of their first album.

Stone Roses DVD
And yes, with the invention of DVD's Silvertone records find a new way of squeezing that little bit more money from the Roses' corpse. For the uninformed Silvertone records release a new Roses product every year or so. A new compilation? Done that. A new version of the debut album with slightly different sleeve? Oh yes. A new single of an old album track? Several times. How about a remix album? Now they release the two old Roses videos "the Complete" and "Blackpool Live" in one DVD package. For the record the band receive absolutely nothing from any Silvertone product. Most people will agree that this isn't very fair.

The Blackpool Live DVD is a pretty poorly filmed document of one of their finest gigs. The DVD has been slightly remastered and it's not quite as dark or muffled as the video but it still fails to capture the magic of what must have been an earth shattering event. Ian Brown was never one of the best live singers and this does the band no favours. If you were there it didn't matter that Ian wasn't singing in tune or John wouldn't turn his flanger pedal off. But on DVD it is all rather trying to watch. The Blackpool gig is worth watching once as a valuable record of the Roses live, but it won't be watched over and over like DVD2.

The second DVD contains most of the "Complete Stone Roses" video and here lies the real value of the DVD. There's Fools Gold on TOTP, the Rapido interview, the "Amateurs! Amateurs!" performance on the Late Show and lots more. There's even MY GOD! a few seconds of home video footage Silvertone haven't released before! Surprisingly here's a few things missing - notably the She Bangs the Drums video and the Fools Gold Video. I guess Silvertone must be saving them for the DVD volume two along with some Ian Brown toenail clippings.
This DVD is well worth buying for any Roses fan, unless they already own the "Complete" video, in which case it's fairly pointless. A good compilation DVD of Stone Roses footage, great songs and a great band. Silvertone will continue to release more cash ins for as long as we buy it.

Silvertone cash in - but its well worth it
After finding to a dusty cassette of Waterfall aged 11, the Roses have always been my favourite band. They just have that special aura, that few else possesed. So I now have just about everything they released apart from a DVD. Until now...

It was only a matter of time before Silvertone got with the times and released a long overdue DVD of the Roses. Surely one of the only major bands upto this point without one.
So, obviously its another attempt from the labels to cash in on the legendary status of the Roses (avoid all 'Greatest Hits packages like the plague), but to be fair there is a lot of footage I had never seen before.

Originally I thought it was just the Blackpool gig, but there is much more on show. Some fairly amatuerish (late show clip anyone ?) videos from the late 80's are in, mainly live shows on tape, and dodgy purple graphics !

The sound on the gig is better than I expected, and does capture some the magic of the time. Being born five years too late, I missed them first time around, becoming a fan during their, in my opinion, underatted comeback album and tour. All the classics are there, plus 'Where Angels Play', my favourite although not that well known.

The extras are very interesting. Two songs at the Hacienda, the smarmy Wilson apologising that he had thought they were crap, then jumping on teh bandwagon, and a hilarious Ian/John interview where the phrase 'blood from a stone' is very apt !
Also some home film footage showing making that classic album which was unexpected but valuable.

Overall, a must have for any fan and any other music fan who likes good tunes !

Silvertone in Roses 'Cash In' Shock
It was only a matter of time until Silvertone 'got with the times' and released a DVD format of the Stone Roses material it had. And frankly I don't think it'll be worth the wait, for some. Quite why this has been extended to a double disc set isn't clear.............or am I being naive. Of course I am. The content would have fit quite snugly on a single but what about the profit margains? Having vented my angst against corporate policy, lets assess the actual content. I suppose it all depends on how much you are a) Into the Stone Roses or b) curious as to what the fuss is/was about. They were, quite simply, the most pivital band of their time. It sounds crap now but 'They really mattered'. For that reason the inclusion of the Snub TV footage (filmed in Feb 1989 at the Hacienda no less) is, to me, worth the cover price as is. To witness the band at the threshold of national recognition (as acknowledged in the introduction)is truly 'something'. 'Blackpool Live'was always ropey on video, so DVD isn't going to improve it any. But to have the opportunity to relive those moments at the Empress Ballroom (specifically the first and last tracks (Adored & Resurrection)) is, again, special and worth the shell out. Other highlights? The Otherside of Midnight excerpt (with Tony 'Bloody' Wilson) is spine tingling. The Late Show blow out is still hilarious today, in fact the TV appearances probably save the set as a whole. The band were always the 'Crappest Group in the World' to interview and the Rapido and Brown/Squire interview will confirm this. The home video is a 'single watch' piece - it is what it is, a home movie. How often do you sit down and watch your own stuff? Not that often, eh? The videos too are a disappointment - no original 'She Bangs the Drums' but 'I Wanna Be Adored' is interesting as it's the full LP version rather than the later truncated single.
The Stone Roses were a special band to me personally, so Silvertone were always gonna get my 15 quid but is there enough for Joe Public? Given the scarcity of Roses footage i think so, but really only just. Stick with the TV performances to get the real flavour of the growing excitement leading to the album's release and wonder where it all went wrong from there - special moments in time..........
