The redesigned edition of Axis & Allies emphasizes the game's dedication to historical detail, including the revamping of play pieces to reflect real-life military vehicles. Now German tanks are shaped like Panther tanks, while the U.S. and the U.K. tanks resemble Sherman tanks. Changes to the fighter planes include transforming the U.K. fighters into Spitfires, the U.S. fighters into P-38 Lightnings, and the German fighters into Ju-87 Stukas.

While retaining Axis & Allies' historical flavor and complex strategy, updates to the game's rules -- such as new guidelines for weapons development research -- help streamline and improve game balance. Other specific additions to the game include new sea zone configurations and even new territories.

World War 2 from the Top in a Classic Game
This is a very simple yet gives a great overview of WW2. Set at the highest strategic level up to 5 players, playing the Soviet Union, The Third Reich, United Kingdom, Japanese Empire and U.S.A. must decide how to allocate their production (measured in units of 1 million manhours) to ensure the quickest way to victory.

The game begins at the zenith of the Axis glory, at the time of Pearl Harbor, Germany has conquered mainland Europe and has occupied large parts of Eastern Europe. The mighty stuggle of Titans, Germany and Soviet Russia is at hand. How will you conduct the war, as Germany will you build bomber fleets to bomb your enemies industrial production, will you go all in against the Soviet Union or diversify your efforts. As the Soviet Union, will you hold out until the UK and USA are strong enough to attack Germany and Japan. As the UK will you go to war straight away to put presure on Germany, build bombers or clear North Africa and strengthen your forces before commiting on the mainland, as Japan will you concentrate on the Pacific Area or go against Russia? And as the USA - how will you best spend your massive production assets, will you go for weapons research a risky buisness with great opportunities if successful, will you go for Germany or Japan first. There are plenty of choices to be made in the excellent game that more often than not will run the same course as WW2 although surprising variations may appear.

Overall it is a very good game and best played in group play with 4 to 5 players. This is also a game for dedicated players since a game can easily reach up to 6 hours but for me these are 6 fun filled hours! The game board and models are nice and the box is durable. Players will learn quite a bit about the course of the war and this game has been around for over 20 years now and is destined to become a classic.

A Brilliant Game
As others before me said, if you played/liked Risk a lot, but you want something more out of a game, A&A is the game for you.
It's not overly complicated game, but it is complex, and also time consuming, it's not a "coffee break" game.
It's designed for 2-5 players, but bear in mind that 2 and 5 player variants are the best.But any number, of course, works.

So, get this classic and start shooting at those allie...err, Nazis :D

A beast of a game
A&A is one of the best-designed board games i've ever played. The real beauty of it is the multiple levels of complexity that are available to the gamer. Search for A&A strategies on google and you'll see a whole literature dedicated to advanced tactics and tournements, but the game can be played on a simpler level right out of the box. If you love risk, but find it samey and a little simplistic, this game delivers changes where they really count in comparison: a great variety of units, accompanying variety in strategy, unique skills according to the player's country or in-game research, and a far greater detail to the world map.

Along with Puerto Rico (a very little-known game, but a true classic), this is my favourite board game. (Unless you reduce chess to the status of a board game, that is, when it more resembles an entire way of thinking...) Anyway, A&A is a really great game on many levels imo.
