Synopsis
Breaking from his signature slacker-underdog films like CLERKS, MALLRATS, and CHASING AMY, Kevin Smith delivers the feel-good family movie JERSEY GIRL. While Smith's pert one-liners and wryly ironic sense of humour are clearly present in the script, his casting choices (Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck) and glossy aesthetic identify the film as a mainstream Hollywood crowd-pleaser. Affleck stars as Ollie, a powerful entertainment executive with a perfect wife (Lopez) and a beautiful Manhattan apartment. But when his wife dies in childbirth and his career fizzles to a halt, he humbly gives up his fast-paced Manhattan lifestyle for the benefit of his daughter Gurtie (Raquel Castro), who is 7 years old for the majority of the film. He moves to New Jersey to live with his father (George Carlin), finds a new romantic interest (Liv Tyler), and learns some lessons about what's important in life. A subplot about Will Smith keeps a string of Hollywood insider jokes and quick cameos (Matt Damon) running throughout the film, while a school play modeled after "Sweeney Todd" lends itself to some funny theatrical moments. An emotive pop soundtrack features music by Aimee Mann in addition to a handful of well-timed entries that help move the plot along ("Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" plays as Ollie sheepishly drives across the river from Manhattan to Jersey), rounding out JERSEY GIRL as a likeable comedy. Parents beware, Smith may have curbed his edginess for this one, but foul language abounds.

Solid and Enjoyable.4
Unlike the mass Band-Waggon jumpers of this world, who constantly slate this movie when holding it in comparison to Kevin Smith's earlier efforts, Im a fan. I loved Clerks, Dogma, and Chasing Amy for there ascerbic humour and unique storylines, I loved Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back for being, just plain simple laugh out loud comedies. In Jersey Girl Smith made a movie thats just flat out enjoyable, and no comparison to his previous 5 should take away from that. It may not carry his usual edgy dialouge, but the whole point for me is that it doesnt need to. As far as Smith selling out to the mainstream goes, if its the movie he wanted to make then how can he be? The cast( Affleck and Carlin especially) are all excellent, The movie looks superb and it deserves far more recognition that it recieved.

Feel good movie making3
This is the strange Kevin Smith film as it's the one that doesn't take place in the View Askew universe and is his first step away from his beloved characters.

This is done to mix effect, because this isn't a bad movie - actually quite enjoy it - but it is definitely his weakest film. There just seems to be something missing in the plot that makes it feel unfinished, plus it's a little cheesy.

I was a bit apprehensive about getting this, but I'm glad I did as it is a good film, even if it does feel a little bit too sugary/feel good at times.

The plot revolves around a man whose wife dies in labour and he is left to raise the kid on his own and subsequently loses his job and has to do something he hates for a living all the while wishing for something more.

The film tries to be more adult, but still has plenty of low brow humour that kind of stands out to be honest with you.

You should see this film if you fancy a dose of feel good, but not if you're a big fan of Jay and Silent Bob.

Fantastic and Touching film4
An excellent film, I can not understand why it got so slated at the American box office. There are some very touching points made in this film about how alone people feel when someone close to them dies and the responsibilities which people have to take on when someone close to you die's. Ben Affleck gives a fantastic performance and I feel that J Lo shouldn't have been in the film but hey ho life goes and they made the best of it.

ALL IN ALL A EXCELLENT FILM AND A MUST BUY
