History of Warfare-The Jacobites4
All in all the The Jacobites is a good introduction to the turbulent era of British history following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The DVD recounts the efforts of ousted King James II and his descendants, particularly "Bonnie" Prince Charlie, to re-establish the (Catholic) Stuart dynasty on the British throne. Although only an hour long production, it succeeds quite well in dramatizing the Jacobite uprisings. Interesting battle reconstruction footage is interspersed with expert analysis, period images and "eyewitness" accounts. One caveat of the production is that it is largely the same as another History of Warfare episode, Culloden, 1746 (right down to the script and footage, in many instances). If one is interested in the period there is really no need to purchase both programs; of the two this is probably the best, although I enjoyed both. A spin-off of this derivation is that this final battle of the Jacobite wars is treated much more throughly than other conflicts like Sheriffmuir (1715), in an earlier round of the rebellions. Still, the political aspects of the struggles are dealt with quite well for an one hour programme, and the interested neophyte should find The Jacobites a worthwhile introduction to the Stuarts' "last stand."
