Robin Gibbs Excels!
Having an early release of this DVD, I must admit Robin Gibb sounds extremely good, even if he appears a bit stiff onstage. His mood is upbeat and he seems to truly be enjoying himself, sleek and dressed all in black, (hair-piece too). He is backed by the Frankfurt Philharmonic Orchestra (they also worked with Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, previously). The setting is rich and intimate with a brilliant light show. Half of the songs are Bee Gees titles that sound somewhat empty without the harmonies (there are two back-up singers emulating the Bee Gees, which is to be expected). Despite that, the deliveries are still great. "Emotion" is brilliant, however, and "My Lover's Prayer" has a nifty surprise. Robin's own personal material, ("I Started A Joke", "Please", Juliet", etc.) are more powerful and engaging with a vocal that still sounds fantastic. He did not sing any material from his "Secret Agent" or "Walls Have Eyes" albums, which was disappointing. Some of his work is even sung a capello showcasing his vibrant voice. It's not the Bee Gees, but it's a historic event of one third of pop's greatest trio.
Disappointing sound balance
We so looked forward to listening to this dvd and while it is wonderful to see Robin Gibb solo we really felt the sound balance was poor as on many of the songs he was drowned out by the orchestra. As it is his wonderful voice that was the attraction this was a surprise and one wonders what the sound engineer at the concert was hearing. Worth getting if you are a BGs fan, but could have been so much better.
ROBIN GIBB AND THE FRANKFURT NEUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
I am huge Bee Gees / Robin Gibb fan and looked forward to seeing this DVD very much. Sadly, however, I was a little dissappointed. During some songs, especially Night Fever, the orchestra almost drowns Robin's voice. I also felt that he should have included much more of his own material rather than do Bee Gees numbers. He didn't do any tracks from Walls Have Eyes or Secret Agent which was a great shame. He could also have interacted with the crowd a bit more.
He still has that brilliant, unmistakable vibrato voice and this DVD is obviously a must buy for all die hard fans out there!!!!
