A dark tale from a darker time.........
If there is a better interpretation of the dark subterranean, subliminal, culural imperitves that drive one man to kill another...I haven't seen it. Two bosnian lifelong freinds, one serb (Milan), one muslim(Halil) find themselves on the opposite sides of the hideous bosnian war. The film seemlessly cuts through several timelines to tell this thoroughly engrossing tale. Many facets of yugoslavia's agony are alluded to, and some familliarity with the conflict would help.Milan, shattered in a Belgrade hospital, considers the road that led him to the trauma wards.Poignant vignettes reveal his humanity and eventual moral and physical descent into madness. We take the journey with him and we understand how,the hitherto dormant twin evils of ethnic intolerace and religious nationalism, mutilate his psyche and body.Much of the film takes place in a tunnel where the cornered serbs try to fathom out their seemingly incomprehensible predicament. Through clever editing the barely concealed hopeless anger of the directors vision, cuts through us like a bayonet thrust. The tone veers fom black humor to boiling rage as the warring parties are depicted as one and the same! From the clothes they wear,to the values they share.Though told from a serb viewpoint, the absurdity of their worldview is never skirted over. Velja the thief,Fork the giant,Speedy the junkie,Laza the missled, the Proffesor who should know better, all their stories unfold. It's not the violence or the cruelty, though both abound but rather the characters that suck you in to the inevitable question:'if I lived their lives would I be the same?'The film ends as Milan, the most sensitive and empathetic character drags his destroyed body across the floor to kill a muslim prisoner.See it,think about it,shattering, spellbinding, unforgetable!
