Synopsis
A revolutionary show in terms of both form and content upon its debut in 2001, 24 has been hooking more and more viewers ever since with its thrilling, multifaceted plotlines that never fail to surprise. Kiefer Sutherland plays Jack Bauer, the head of the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit, and each series plays itself out in real time, with every hour-long episode representing an hour in one very eventful day in Jack's life. This collection features the first five days, or series, in their entirety.

Bad Day For Jack, Excellent For The Viewer5
Kiefer Sutherland plays Counter Terrorist Agent Jack Bauer who has to suffer many a bad day in "24" the award winning real time drama that for me is the best tv series ever made.

For those of you new to "24";

Each series is 24 episodes long, each episode when broadcast is an hour long (with adverts) and is in real time but as there are no ads on DVD's the episodes are obviously shorter. Therefore each series takes place over 24 hours.

Being a counter terrorist agent Jack has to deal with many threats to both LA (where CTU is based) and the US, these include assasination, nuclear and biological.

Kiefer Sutherland has been reborn in this role and portrays the many emotions that Jack Bauer endures brilliantly. His character lives on the edge and often goes over the line in the quest of saving everyone from another bad day.

Backed up by an ever changing cast of great actors including the lovely Elisha Cuthbert, whose character annoyingly walks into stupid situations in the first two series, "24" is a drama that encompasses all emotions and delves into the private lives of the characters.

Special mention must go to Dennis Haysbert who plays President Palmer, his relationship with Jack grows as he relies on Jack's heroics time and time again. Also, Sarah Clarke as Nina Myers who I can relate to a boomarang (keeps coming back !), I won't say any more ! I could mention many, many more fine performances, but I would like to mention the appearance of Dennis Hopper in series One who fits his role perfectly.

Throughout the five series, the acting on the whole is excellent, rarely does it forray into the land of cheese. Most episodes are packed with suspense, drama and all the ingredients that make you wanting more and more. Elements of subtle comedy are also injected with occasional one liners breaking the frantic pace that the series generally installs.

The various plots are at times testing, really making you think, they aren't helped by various sub plots that unfold as the series progresses, it really is the kind of programme that you have to watch to keep up with. For some reason CTU has a habit of being infected with "moles" and I don't mean the furry mammals that inhabit our land.

Most episodes end with a cliffhanger of some sort and this can be exciting yet frustrating at the same time, especially when watching it in its tv broadcast format and having to wait a week. Episodes sometimes move at such pace the stroyline really unfolds and you actually forget you are watching it in real time and realise its all part of the same day.

I would like to mention the continuity, bearing in mind this is made in real time the producers et al have to ensure the all the little details eg, lighting, stubble are just right for the part of the day that the episode takes place and this is done really well.

Of course, this is tv land and tv land often bends the rules a little. Yes some of "24" is far fetched, some of the technology and gadgets are too clever for real but this is tv, its switching off from the real world and emersing yourself in the entertainment world.

Some people say how can Jack have so many bad days ? But then how many terrorist plots are foiled that we don't hear about ?

"24" does what it does brilliantly, it has an uncanny knack of mirroring real life threats. For me the first series still stands out as the best followed by series three where Jack is undercover infiltrating a Mexican drug gang but all are top notch.

For me, "24" is without doubt the best tv series ever made, other series such as Lost (which I also watch) pale in comparison and if you don't own it at all then this boxset is a necessity !

Best television show for years5
Every series is brilliant, almost every hour has a twist, or a turn, or a great piece of action, or human drama.

It's probably difficult to do justice to this show, or to say anything that another reviewer hasn't. It's simply superb, great drama and great television, especially when viewed on DVD, as opposed to tv. No ad-breaks, and no waiting a week for the next episode. The only worry with these five series, is the distinct possibility that it will overtake your life for a week or more.

With all five series, you can watch Jack Bauer develop as a character, moving through situations, and working with different people. Plenty of sad deaths along the way, plenty of terrorists, plenty of deaths, and certainly not for the faint hearted.

At this stage, if you're thinking of shelling out £100+ for the whole series, it'd probably be worth waiting until November for the release of a Seasons 1-6 boxset to make sure you have a complete collection.

24 has taken over my life!5
This has got to be the most gripping series I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

Sadly, this has meant my life has turned into a Jack Bauer fest with me quite literally organising my time around watching the next episode-I never thought I would enjoy being such a total loser quite so much!

Do not, I repeat, do not attempt to watch this series on broadcasting TV as it will send you absolutely nuts with frustration!

Buy the boxset and enjoy many days tucked up in your home with the legendary Mr. Sutherland keeping you glued to the sofa.
