Synopsis
Raymond (Hugh Laurie) is a bank clerk with a secret passion for samba. When he discovers his wife having an affair with his slimy boss, Raymond snaps and steals a hefty sum of cash from the bank, using it to fund a quick trip to Rio de Janeiro where he hopes to find Samba Monthly covergirl Orlinda (Brazilian model Vanessa Nunes). Upon his arrival, he falls in with scheming cab driver Paulo, who while agreeing to assist Raymond in his hunt, also has his eyes on the small fortune Raymond carries with him. While Raymond may be after one person in all of Rio, soon almost everyone in Rio is after him--or rather, what he carries with him.
Customer Reviews
Good Clean fun
The previous reviewer gave away the whole plot. Hugh Laurie seems to be playing himself or what we have come used to.
He goes to Rio with the stolen money and meets dances with and sleeps with Vanessa Nunes which was worth the effort in itself.
The plot is completely improbable but you don't mind as it is a frothy comedy and it all turns out well in the end as out hero gets to go to Rio meet the girl of his dreams sleeps with her keeps the money and lives happily ever after.
Great views of Rio (not that I have been there)
Good clean fun and a modicum of laughs.
Worth a viewing any day of the week. I have seen a lot worse more high concept films. Reminiscent of Bridget Jones Diary and Four weddings etc.
The only unbelievable part of the film was that a London taxi driver would get you anywhere in a hurry for just £200
A good entertaining film.
Oh Hugh!
Well I watched this film purely because Hugh Laurie was in it and he saves it from being completely terrible Just! Its one of those films that you know could of been ALOT better but worth a look if you like Hugh.
Entertaining & lighthearted
---Spoiler Warning---
Raymond (Hugh Laurie) is stuck in a dead end job in a bank with an rude and malicious boss. He loves to dance the Samba and his dream is to dance with the girl that frequently graces the cover of "Samba Monthly".
On a grey and miserable Christmas Eve Raymond discovers that his wife (Lia Williams) is leaving him for his hated boss. Miserable, alone and left to lock up for the holidays. Ray decides to get his own back by robbing the bank and catching the first plane to Rio de Janerio.
Arriving in Rio he 'teams up' with an eccentric taxi driver (Santiago Segura)who helps him to track down Orlinda (Vanessa Nunes) the girl from the cover of "Samba Monthly" After spending the night together Raymond awakes to find both his money and Orlinda gone.
Raymond then on the trail of his stolen wealth, is quickly drawn into Rio's underworld, while the local gangsters are hot on his tail. Finally captured and forced to work for the local mob, Raymond is unable to escape and made to count money.
Orlinda feeling guilty plots with the taxi driver to help free Raymond. While escaping, he manages to bag the money he originally stole from the bank.
Relising the bank doesn't open for another day, Raymond decides to take the money back, but promises Orlinda he will return for her. A race against time ensues for him to get the money back before the bank opens and anyone realisises it's missing.
Arriving at the bank a few minutes late, the place is surrounded by police cars. Raymond enters the bank resigned to admitting his deciet, when the cheif officer explains to him that someone has broken into the bank from the outside and looted it. Realising that he is in the clear, Raymond immediatly heads back to Rio and Orlinda with the money.
The closing shot shows Raymond and Orlinda married with 2 children sitting on the terrace belonging to a mansion and the taxi driver with them.
