Kids film with grown up humour
This is for kid's and grown ups, with a hint of grown up humour.
I had rented via Amazon rental services for the kids.
Not knowing if modern day kids will find the basic 2-D cartons
any good, considering Shrek and many new great looking 3-D offered.
The film is great, funny, a good story that most will enjoy.
I hope more DVD stories are offered, worth buying and worth renting out.
Runs for 1 hrs, offering 5.1 Dolby digital, with good picture quality.
Just 1 dvd, no second dvd with extra, is the only down side.
Thanks for reading..
Even my three-year-old doesn't like it.
I grew up as a fan of Asterix and Obelix, and I have the box set of the old animated movies, and they are FUNNY!
Apparently this movie is based on the book Asterix and the Normans, but the creators were incapable of doing a straight Asterix adventure.
It has been done using that Hollywood template where big name actors voice the characters, and every line seems to have a double meaning. Yes, I am Asterix, but I also know that I am a character in a movie, and here, look at these cool topical references I am making. All references which will look painfully out of date in ten years.
And then they punish you at the end with a Celine Dion song. Yikes!
Maybe they were concerned with cleaning up Asterix and Obelix for a new generation, removing all those horribly politically incorrect references. And removing all the humour while they are at it.
Go with the original movies, and your kids will thank you.
Could have been so much better
If you have never read the books then this is pretty good. The animation is very good. The voices used are brilliant just how I imagined Asterix and Obelix would sound. In places its very funny and I am absolutely certain that all children would enjoy it.
However if you've read any of the books you will know instantly that this animated version has been tinkered with. The studio or whoever was responsible has added a dreadful music soundtrack which inclues "Eye of the Tiger". For the older audience this will be associated with Rocky III and it really is a horrible piece of music, as indeed are many of the other songs in the soundtrack. The plot is entirely predictable (boy meets girl etc) and the inclusion of a number of modern dance sequences in a club/disco scenario to try and to appeal to a younger audience is truly awful.
My advice for any parents out there is to buy your kids the books first, so they can appreciate the wit, wonderful characters and artwork created by Goscinny and Uderzo.
